A Life Without Limits

If a book has ever spoken to me with a title this was it…and I happily judged by the cover.  As you might have guessed from the frequent book reviews, I love to read. Sometimes you seek out a book for knowledge or relaxation and other times I believe it finds you. In this case, I was very lucky that it found me.

Not being a triathlete, Chrissie’s book came to my attention through the great enthusiasm of two Miami friends. I was lucky to then meet and spend the day with her at the Oakley Learn To Ride event.  Here is a quick overview of my thoughts on Chrissie and her book.

Synopsis:A Life Without Limits: A World Champion's Journey is probably filled under autobiography, as it tells the story Chrissie’s life and yet I think it’s so much more based on the little tidbits that will help any athlete. It is not a how to guide or a step by step training plan to dominate the triathlon world…though she could really make a killing on that kind of book too.

It is a reminder to travel, to live and to enjoy the heck out of whatever it is that you choose to do!! Chrissie didn’t start out with the goal of becoming a world champion, she was racing with borrowed bikes, borrowed wet suits and more! However, she also put an amazing amount of heart and determination in to every single one of those races which is what quickly propelled her to try for greater things.  But it is a stark reminder that the GEAR DOESN’T DO THE WORK, you do!

”You will remain the same person before, during and after the race, so the result, however important, will not define you. The journey is what matters.”

I swear we have met in a previous life and she stole me line. It’s all about the journey!!

Favorite tips:
Use the tried and tested tools that help many athletes through the tough moments:

  • Mantra
  • Music
  • Poem
  • Visualize friends or food

Break it down in to small steps. It’s a slow progression of testing yourself in training to endure so that during the race you know you can overcome discomfort.”

The brain is constantly trying to impose limits on what it thinks we can achieve. We should constantly question it, fight it.”

“We need to take triathlon seriously, but ultimately it is something to be enjoyed.”
