Trail vs Road Running: Can You Love Them Both? And the Treadmill too!

17shares

It seems blasphemous to tell my trail running friends that I love my time on the road and probably worse to tell my road running friends that I cherish my treadmill runs as well.

Maybe I’m just an odd sort of runner, but more and more I feel like I’m not alone. I just want to run and be free to enjoy wherever that run might happen!

Hundreds (yup we’re small, but mighty) are coming forward to stand your ground and declare “I can run anywhere and love it!“Can you love trail and road running? A discussion and why it's ok if you do

Trail vs Road: Pro’s

Does it have to be trail vs road? Can’t we all just get along?

I see tons of post shouting out why people love trail running, but not so many that portray a love of roads. Is it because there’s a different emotional connection? Let’s dive in and see what we can find….

Why we love trail running?

  • Connecting with nature is healing
  • New challenges to our running due to varied surfaces which requires additional muscle recruitment
  • Softer surfaces to save our joints
  • It’s a quiet, calm escape from our daily busy lives
  • Cleaner air and more trees could mean easier breathing
  • Stronger legs for faster running
  • Always a potential for wildlife sightings

A former road runner, turned trail lover Heather had this to say: “Because of trail running, I find myself unable to sit still. I’m constantly daydreaming of hitting the trails, for running out there NEVER feels like a chore. I want to run, all day, every day. I want to get lost deep in my thoughts, deep in the primal thrill of barreling down hills and pushing my limits back up them.”Why we love trail runningBut what about the pro’s of road running?

  • It allows me a moment to zone out due to the predictability of what’s under my feet
  • I can ponder my next blog post or an issue that’s been swirling in my mind
  • Listening to a podcast, I can absorb what’s being said because I don’t need to be full focused on my next foot fall
  • I can get in to a rhythm and maintain a set pace
  • People watching and random sites like street art and abandoned shoes
  • Easier access when traveling to roads right outside any hotel
  • Can feel safer because more people are around
  • Easier for early morning/night runners due to lighted streets

As stated by both Katie and Theodora – roads are preferred because they have enough trouble not tripping over their own feet!Running along Harbor Island in San DiegoAnd because I just can’t leave well enough alone….reasons to love the treadmill!!

  • Allows you to add hill work when living in a flat place (my Florida savior)
  • Provides a safe alternative during icy weather or intense heat
  • Easier to focus on improving form and cadence
  • A feeling of safety after crazy news stories
  • Opportunity to watch embarrassing tv shows (cough Real Housewives)

Why we love treadmill running

Is it More About Culture?

Maybe the difference doesn’t have anything to do with the actual benefits of running…maybe it has everything to do with the mindset, culture and people who gravitate to each?

Trail Runner Magazine did a great little piece on this:

  • Road runners show up in snazzy matching outfits and Nike track suits. Trail runners have been mistaken for homeless people.
  • Road runners try to step around the puddles on the street; trail runners are warned not to rock hop when going through rivers and streams so they don’t break an ankle
  • Road races have aid stations every two miles where the volunteers throw Gatorade into your mouth as you run by. Trail runners have a delectable feast at their aid stations with cookies, chips, PB&Js, trail mix and gummy bears.
  • Road runners are constantly checking their watches for split times; trail runners check where the sun is in the sky, to see if they need to take out their headlamps.
  • Road runners check for flat fast courses; trail runners look at elevation charts and the scenery.
  • Road runners are lean and skinny; trail runners can crush a road runner with their calves and power up mountains with their glutes.
  • Road marathons might have up to 40,000 runners, start with fireworks and end with bands and balloons; trail races start with, “Ready, Set . . . GO!”

I suppose if that’s the case, I’m a complete whack job for loving all the different sides of running!Trail vs Road Running - Is one really better?

Think Out Loud with  me…
Do you love running in one place over another?

Do you inherently think one type of runner is better?

    While I do love single track trails more than the road and definitely more than a treadmill, I’ll take a run anywhere if it means I get to run.

    What if I just really like to run? I don’t want to choose and I refuse to do so! Though trail running means I will probably fall on my face….

    over the years I have actually learned to like the treadmill! I am not a trail runner but a good mix of outside and indoors really works well for my routine

    I like running, in any form. As long as my body is healthy and I’m putting one foot in front of another, I don’t really care where I am.

    Variety IS the spice of life! I like changing up where I run, for sure. There aren’t a ton of trails near me; I miss the ones I used to run on in San Antonio. :)

    The great debate! It depends for me I find trail running to be the most fun but also the most challenging (physically). Road running is great because you get fresh air and can just breathe. Treadmill running I love for some odd reason but mostly because when the weather is bad it’s always there. It also is different on my legs and while more painful once I get back into it easier on my joints. Plus I can tune out to music which I don’t anymore on the road for safety reasons which really stinks. This all coming from a not so experienced or “hardcore” runner.

TREADMILL PACE CHART - (swipe) Understand how incl TREADMILL PACE CHART - (swipe) Understand how incline compares to the pace of running outside.
.
You’ll notice that a 0% incline it’s actually considered a slower pace, which is because there’s no resistance and the belt is helping you out a little bit.
.
But once we start to add incline, it can actually be like training and a slightly faster (or harder effort) than outside.
|||
EASIER OR HARDER? Which camp are you?
👍Treadmill runs are easier
👎 Treadmill runs are harder
.
It’s funny because I get mixed messages from runners who find that it’s either much harder or much easier to spend time running on the treadmill.
|||
WHY HARDER??
👇👇👇
There are usually a few key reasons why.
1️⃣Incorrect incline - have you ever put a level on your treadmill to check that it’s actually flat at 0? Currently mine is slightly declined at 0...probably a result of 6 moves.
.
2️⃣Running too close to the front is a natural tendency, but it means your stride gets a little funky and you start to arch your back so you don’t hit your arms on the console.
(In slow mo I start doing that in this video.)
.
3️⃣Temperature - If it’s warm where you have your treadmill then a fan or opening a window can make a big difference.
.
4. Mental battles - you hate the space, you call it the dreadmill, whatever it might be, if you’ve told yourself it’s harder then your body and brain will make sure you’re right.
|||
Hope those tips help and now the big question...do you run at 1% most of the time???

Have you read it yet??? If not, no worries, my husband hasn’t either 😂
|||
One year ago, I walked in to a store and saw a stack of my books and nearly burst in to tears at a dream that I’d long held coming to life.
|||
🥰What I didn’t realize is the PEOPLE who showed up that night and have continued to send messages all year long about how the book has helped them, would mean more than any sales number.
|||
As you all know the world changed the next week and the book tour was canceled. 💔
.
Yet, thanks to many of you it has lived on all over the world 🌎 and has many great years to come.
.
Especially once it becomes the first fitness book in #reesesbookclub 😆yup keeping the dream alive.
|||
🏃‍♀️This whole process was fun and hard and scary and rewarding. So basically, exactly like running.
.
🤯And mind blowing that because of running I had not just the opportunity to chase a goal, but the mental tools to embrace the fears.
|||
➡️Now the real question is how long to wait before writing a second book??
.
➡️What’s the last running book you loved?
SHARE THE ONE that resonates most with you. 🏃‍♀️🏃🏾🏃🏽‍♂️

It’s true, I’ll never stop talking about the warm up 😂. But right now the idea that running is HOPEFUL really strikes a chord.💜

We show up mile after mile always looking to what’s ahead and what’s possible.

AVOID HITTING THE WALL (save this and review befor AVOID HITTING THE WALL (save this and review before races) -AKA Bonking. UK friends giggle at that, but it’s a term just like fartlek.
.
It’s that painful moment when your mind tells your legs to stop and it feels like there’s nothing you can do to turn the tides. It leaves emotional scars!🥵

WHAT TO DO!
1️⃣Train differently - seems obvious, but consistent training that follows a plan which progressively and smartly builds your miles and strength and speed...ya it works.

2️⃣Fuel, fuel, fuel - force yourself to eat before races and long runs even if not hungry.
.
Starting fueling sooner than you think you need to and keep doing it. During races your body is running on more carbs and needs that steady flow of energy.
.
🧠 Your brain functions on CARBS, stop depriving it or it will tell you to stop running. If food while running is an issue for you, checkout something like @genucan.

3️⃣Pacing - Stop going out too fast because you’re excited, it absolutely catches up to you. Ideal is even pacing start to finish.

4️⃣Pay attention to your brain. @fitzgerald.matt in How Bad Do You Want it does a great job of showing how the brain can limit performance if you don’t know what’s happening up there.

5️⃣Recover better - Stop over training and give your body tools to help it destress from all the work...the best one is SLEEP. I also love @resiliencecbd to help with nerves prior to a race and quality sleep during training.

❓❓Helpful?? Have more race day questions?? Or an epic story of hitting the wall?? I wanna know.❓❓

Thanks to @moxie82co for capturing this weird moment, it worked great for this post.

🥳For the next 30 days in the Virtual Run Club we’ll be going hard on all the pre-hab work for hips, glutes and abs. Because running isn’t just about the miles.
//
That’s one of the reasons I’ve been consistently doing @insidetracker bloodwork since 2015.
.
It’s helped me identify low Vitamin D causing fatigue or catch my wayyy high cortisol to embrace easy runs as key part of the process.

3 CORE MOVES
|||
You can use these as a progression or do all three, they’ll target the hips, glutes and core in different ways with each variation.

Aim for 15 reps prior to a run or do multiple rounds as part of a workout!

1️⃣Side Plank Kneeling Hip Raise - Really focus on your core engaging to raise up and keeping your elbow under your shoulder.

2️⃣Side Plank Kneeling Leg Raise - Again core should be tight to keep hips lifted, not sagging towards the ground. Then focus on your hip and glute to raise the top leg.

3️⃣Straight Leg Side Plank Leg Raise - Engage the core to keep hips high and press the bottom foot in to the ground to really engage your glutes. Slow and steady to remain stable while raising and lowering top leg.

Talk to me!!!
Who’s in for 10 min a day in March?
Who’s gotten blood work to improve their health?
Who’s excited it’s almost spring?
