As noted in my recent post about failing up, I am taking the business of sports recovery much more seriously. I’ve long been good about recovery after long runs, but the truth is my mid-week runs get far less attention. I may finish an interval session, then start working before I’ve even managed to shower! Don’t judge;good ideas come from running so I’ve got to get them out of my head quickly! The brilliant Dr Gonzalez has finally convinced me that if I can just get my digestion and recovery in line, my running progress should pick back up…hence my total desire to do this right and meet my big goals this year!! Part of this I’m doing with accountability via the current 30 Day Injury Prevention Challenge, so check it out if you haven’t.
Now, let’s talk about what recovery involves! Thanks to Thrive Forward Sport, I’ve been getting a lot of reminders and new information to help focus my efforts.
Digestion is as your weakest during and right after hard workouts, which is why you often hear recommendations for taking in liquid support. Some folks do chocolate milk, I am now dairy-free and have seen enough in others to encourage trying something else that has less sugar and more supporting items like turmeric or ginger or glucosamine…or of course all of them!
While they never specifically talk about Vega products, which I think is why this is so successful, Vega formulas are a big part of my recovery because of their contents.
In fact, here a many of the things I’m including in recovery depending upon the workout:
- Sitting with legs up
- Drinking a recovery formula like the Vega Sport Protein and a green juice with a little fruit (mostly greens)
- Taking a nap if needed
- Taking a full rest day
- Getting a massage more frequently
- Epsom salt baths
- Stretching and PT exercises
- Mediation – life stress makes it harder to recover as well
- Focusing on high net gain nutrition (avoid my allergens)
- Taking probiotics and high quality krill oil
- Switching to 10 day training cycle for more time between hard workouts
I couldn’t possibly say it as well as Brendan Braizer or Tony Horton or Hillary Biscay, so I’ll let you check out the complete details for yourself on the free Thrive Forward site. Beyond the instructional videos, there are some great recipes, and downloads. For those of you coming to Blend Retreat next month, I’ll have some great goodies to pass out so you can try all of my favorite things from Vega!
