Continuing the fun of our run to eat series just in time for the holiday built around sugar! First we talked about running to eat cereal and then running to eat pizza…now a little fun with those bite sized trick or treats.
I wish this chart from AnytimeFitness had been tattooed on my forehead as a teen, it would have drastically cut down on my chubby years…I do love me some sugar.
I admit that Halloween is probably the holiday which will most test my reduced sugar intake. I conquered my sugar habit by not going cold turkey, but I think avoiding most of these treats is going to be key to staying on track.
However, I will make an exception one day and then use it as wonderful long run fuel. You gotta live!!!
Running Motivation
Let’s have a little more fun this October with some motivation to run. Besides running for food, I get hyped by new gear and a great running book. In fact, I’ve read over 100 titles (many of which are running books) this year already.
Every month, I find myself testing out new foods, gear and reading books which might be just the thing you’ve been looking for or at least the thing you’ve been wondering about, so without further ado let’s turn your running motivation up a notch.
Fitness Gear
This months featured gear is one I started telling you about last month in an epic post on understanding body fat, along with a tool to measure it at home called the Skulpt AIM. Least you think I share things and don’t use them, I wanted to provide an update!
Skulpt AIM update
When I first got the Skulpt AIM, I’d also done a bod pod test which confirmed my fears that all my running and my low protein intake were resulting in skinny fat. Though I have been out of the country 3 out of the last 8 weeks I have indeed seen my body fat drop 3% already and my MQ improve (muscle quality score)
And uhh no I wasn’t this happy during the workout with My House Fitness. How have I made the changes?
- I finally took in what all of those smart nutritionists were saying about protein intake and oddly while traveling I found it easier than ever to get in enough protein, due to the great availability of fish and let’s be honest the morning breakfast buffet with eggs of all varieties.
- I not only did body weight moves while traveling, but I also started to incorporate 2 strength training sessions each week that focused on very low reps and heavier weights. When I say this is a short session, I mean like 20 minutes including abs and my lunge matrix for the IT Band.
This is honestly the first time in years I’ve started to see a a real shift in my muscles.I love that I can measure per muscle group to see specifically what’s working!! Sweetsauce.
The associated smartphone app is what allows you to track long term progress. It’s made phenomenal strides since they first launched a year or so ago and now I can’t recommend this tool enough, if fat loss is a goal.
Fitness Book
This months book is of course one that will motivate you to run, but in a slightly different way.
If you’ve ever thought your coach was hard…this will make you look at them like a cuddly pink teddy bear. While many of us might never want to have a drill sergeant living in the room next to us waking us at all hours, forcing us to run in blizzards and leap in to froze lakes…
…as runners…we can all relate!
“I have a complete stranger living in my apartment; I’m getting up super early and running every day when it’s freezing. I think some people wished they could do it but they never would. The will to keep doing this and the will to put myself through this is what people think is crazy, and I’m paying for this, literally and metaphorically.”
In fact here is a peak at DAY 1 of training!!! After running 6 miles…time for pull ups
“Seventeen! Cool, that’s my max number. I didn’t think I could even do that. Amazing! Let’s head back upstairs.”
As I start to look up, SEAL is staring at me with a blank expression . . . deadpan. “We’re going to stay here until you do a hundred.”
WHAT?
“I can’t do a hundred. That’s impossible,” I say.
“You better find a way,” he says to me like a father might tell his son to clean his bedroom. “You got a shitty-ass attitude.”
I admit until reading this book I didn’t know who Jesse was and yet now I’m wondering HOW I didn’t know who he was and I really want him for a friend!
He pushes boundaries, he’s thinks quick and he always gets what he wants! He cofounded Marquis Jet, helped pioneer the coconut water craze with Zico coconut water, is a former rapper on MTV and runs ultra marathons, while also supporting his wife Spanx founder Sara Blakely.

My one word: happening.
As in, I'm actually consistently running right now and seeing those much desired improvements. There's still a ways to go for sure, but I'll take what I can get and enjoy that it's actually happening and also that I'm having fun with it!

I also have a Skulpt AIM. It is much more informative than the basic home BF% scale measurements. And I hear you on the skinny fat. Although in my case it was more like fat fat after a summer of high volume cycling but no strength training and too much eating. My one word would be "saddle" as in literally in the saddle on my bicycle and figuratively back in the saddle with my run training.

I hate running at night! Or I should say early hours of the morning in the dark… do the shoe lights really help? I guess I need to get over it because it would be great to get my run over with nice and early, but I hate when can hear 'things' in the woods beside me – yikes!

My Naturopath is really stressing the Protein intake and I am working on it! I admit it is a shift for me. But I am already noticing changes in just a couple weeks! Great work Girl!

Seriously the protein was so hard for me, but I do think it's helping…still not my favorite change ever, but ya know :)

I run at least twice a week before work in the dark. These lights look like something I need. Do they clip on to the shoe?
RunToTheFinish
Yes! There are other lights that people put on hats or carry, this one is super light and clips over your laces.

Aww man, I didn’t need to know the calorie counts on Halloween candy… how am I supposed to eat all of my kids’ candy without feeling any guilt now? :P
Those dang Snickers are truly my weakness… I’ll have to tell my kids to hide them from me or something.

:) ha no guilt, just enjoy and then umm burpees ha!
