National Delurk Day:

0shares

For the last two years I’ve done something that was either going to be a wild success or a big fat flop for the blog {take that fear of rejection!}.

Thus far, it’s turned out to be one of my favorite things.

For ONE little day, many of you come out of your thumb scrolling mode and rejoin the community ensuring that RTTF continues to be a place for all runners to find a little support, some knowledge and fun.

Once again I invite you out of the shadows and in to the light of conversation! Great news this works even for introverts because you don’t actually have to converse with anyone.Invitation to Delurk and join the funGoogle analytics tell me that thousands of you are stopping by each day to grab a little hit off the running passion wagon…but I’ve only gotten to know maybe 5% of you through challenges, races and your witty comments.

The technical term for this the rest of you is lurkers…sounds kind of creepy, but the truth is even my dear parents and some long time friends who read NEVER comment though I’m sure they often have opinions.

That’s right, all of you who joke about how when you started only your mom commented…my mom, dad and husband never comment! So I NEED YOU.

Urban Dictionary: {delurk} Entering an online discussion after a time spent lurking, esp. if suddenly prompted to do so.

– Maybe you’re an uber busy doctor {why hello there}
– Maybe you’ve just had it with social media {meet my husband}
– Maybe you don’t know you can comment without a blog {hey mom!}
– Maybe you don’t want people to know you’re here?! {this isn’t 50 shades of grey people}

One of the things that makes blogging such a joy is hearing from you and seeing the community it has fostered over the years through the challenges and the half marathon training group.

Today, I ask you to stop being just a spectator and join the RTTF community and conversation…it’s time to delurk.

Get to know a fellow runner! It's National Delurk Day over here! Click To Tweet

How to delurk?
Click on the link that says “comments” or the post title to see a comment box.

Write some text {preferably answers to the below questions} in the box and click submit.

It will ask for some details to prove you are a real human (as opposed to the fake human variety). You do NOT need to be a blogger to be a commenter, friend, participant and wonderful person.

We’ll get the ball rolling with these questions:

– Where are you from?
– Are you a runner? yogi? hiker?
– Favorite mantra on tough workouts?
– One place on your travel bucket list?

Have a great site I need to checkout, make sure to leave that in the comments too! This is open to long time readers, new readers and everyone in between – I want to learn about you. Last year nearly 100 of you piped up…let’s see if we can break that number!

    Yes, I am a lurker! I enjoy reading your blog posts. I am a late in life runner and not sure why my non athletic, non competitive self included running a 5k on my 50th Birthday List of 50 things I want to do in the next 50 years, but I did. I ran the 5k (no walking allowed – my rule ?) and still running 2 1/2 years later. Now I am signed up for my 1st half marathon. Any tips for for older beginners welcome!

      Yeahh thanks for saying hello!!!! All the beginner tips I share work for all ages ;) I love that a 5K is on your list!

    I am definitely a long-time lurker! My name is Jenny, and I attempt to blog over at kzrunner.blogspot.com. I say attempt because I have only had one post since July. I started the blog to track my first marathon but got so busy training that I didn't post. I am currently chasing a 2:15 half, which I will attempt at Rock N Roll St. Louis. I just started yoga, and love it! Well, that is my online persona in a nutshell! Hopefully this gets me to post more!
    My recent post A quick update and I'm sorry!!!

    I comment and sometimes lurk! I live in Chicago, I am a RUNNER (and pilates/yoga person). My mantra is "my kind of race. my kind of day" or in the NYC 1/2 "happy race. happy place." I truly believe that attitude is everything in running and life. Bucket list for travel is VERY long – I want to go everywhere. Targeting Croatia and new places in Italy at the moment.

    I am Brie from Michigan and I am a runner :). My favorite mantra is "I can do hard things." I especially love repeating it when I am running hills or doing speed work. One place on travel bucket list… Greece! It needs to happen soon so I can visit my heritage.

    Haha we lurkers have been called out! I most often just quietly like your instagram posts, but I've been lurking and occasionally commenting. Yogi, hiker, runner, bicyclist, blogger – check check check. I'm excited for my third half marathon in 2 weeks and will celebrate by going backpacking (because "taper week" means "Let's go climb mountains!" week, right??). This past year I've been trying to push myself to pick up the pace a little bit, so my mantra has been "The faster you run, the faster you're done." When I'm not traipsing around on trails, I'm in Durham, NC.

    • RunToTheFinish says

      March 31, 2016 at 10:06 am

      Thanks for delurking Liz!! Glad the IG encouraged you to stop by and oh yes I'll be talking about how to do taper right soon :)

    Hi, I'm Becca from South Jersey. I'm fairly new to your blog, though I've been running for much longer than most people think. I also practice yoga, but if I had to choose I would choose running. My running mantras vary. One is "I am a machine" and the other is "I've hurt worse than this". I would love to visit Australia to see some old friends.

    Hi I am Cassi from SE minnesota. I have been running for 5 1/2 years. Initially I started to loose weight and I HATED every second of my 1 mile run. But it slowly became and "addiction"! I was sleeping better, I had more energy and I noticed it helped with my stress load. I have done 5ks, 10k,s half marathons and triathlons. I spend nearly as much time on my road bike in the summer as I do running. I just love being outdoors. I read your blog for inspiration as I am still learning and as I added miles I wanted to continue to do it injury free.
    When I am feeling like I want to stop on a long run I imagine Jillian Michaels in my head screaming at me to not quit (Huge fan of Biggest Loser). Key West and Montana are on my bucket list.

    I am a runner who's in the 6-65 age group but in my mind, I am a lot younger. Esp since I didn't start running until 55.

    I love to race…I race a lot, 5k and half marathons are my favorite.

My running mantra is Suck it up, Princess. I am running 3 Ragnars this year and excited about the challenges of overnight relays, especially trail ones. I also practice yoga which helps balance all the running. I would love to visit New Zealand and Australia. And the Seychelles.

I have been reading your blog for years! Love your style, and the "realness" you bring to the blogging world. My 21 year old daughter is in Ireland as we speak and I am thrilled, but maybe a tad jealous?!!! LOL!

    I've been lurking for a few months now. I live in Aurora CO. I am an on and off again runner with dreams of getting back to it, staying injury free by actually cross training and finishing my first half marathon this year. On tough runs I hear myself saying "yes you can!" I don't like to feel like I've quit so that is usually all it takes to get me to my goal. I love to travel to beautiful places to admire natural scenery and wildlife, Australia is high on my bucket list these days, as are many of the national parks!

    Hey Amanda! I'm definitely a lurker. Mostly I just like to read content for fun. I did just make your healthy pork chops though–they were amazing! I ended up baking them for almost an hour though, probably because I buried them in so many vegetables. I am a runner, a water polo player, and just an all-around athlete, and I'm looking into going into triathlons. I actually used to live in Stapleton with my aunt! But now I'm up in Golden for school. My favorite mantra is "Don't quit on yourself", and I'd love to go for a countryside bike trip anywhere out of country.

    Hi, I'm Julie and I live in southern Indiana. I have always done cardio but I started running in 2014 at age 51 to join some college friends in a half marathon, and since then I've finished 3 halfs and 1 10-mile. Now I run 16-20 miles a week, mostly on the treadmill in the winter because I do not like the cold. I run mostly to combat the effects of menopause and to hold off osteoporosis, truthfully!
    My mantra (other than "Am I done yet?") is "I can if I want to." :)
    I'd love to run the Las Vegas half marathon in November!

    Hello, I am Jessie from Saint Paul, MN. I started running about 8 weeks ago to lose weight and become healthier. Back before a knee injury and 3 kids I was a military medic and used to enjoy a good run. I have not ran outside yet because I still need to build up some muscle to support my injured knee. When I am struggling on the treadmillI replay the drill sergeants voices in my head and that pushes me along. I am so happy to have found you here!

    I'm a short-term lurker who found this blog a little while ago (referred from Greatist). I'm from Melbourne, Australia and currently living in Barcelona, Spain, which, happily, has a spectacular climate for running (mild and not too rainy, plenty of sunshine) plus flat beach AND mountains close by. Something for everyone.

    Nice to meet you! I'm a runner (on and off for about six years, currently on, happily) who runs for the mind-clearing effects and not for times (read: turtle!). My limit is the half, not sure I want to dedicate marathon level mental and physical energy to running!

    Mantra for hard runs: "Keep turning the cranks". And I'm not even a cyclist! Also: "You're feeling strong". Sometimes I convince myself!

    Travel bucket list is so long that it's gonna affect my upload limit, but Greece is definitely up there. Gotta make it in the next couple of years.

    One site-related comment, now I'm here: Not sure if you've considered allowing the posts to be read in their entirety through RSS. At the moment you can only read an excerpt and then you have to click through to the site. I prefer reading posts in Feedly, so if you just didn't realise this was the case, maybe you can think about changing it. If you made it like that for a reason, I'll keep clicking through! Keep up the good work!

      March 31, 2016 at 10:14 am

      Thanks for saying hi Lucia!!! I used to have the full RSS in the feed, but then it was getting hijacked by some sites :( so I had to turn it off

    I'm from Houston, Texas.
    I've fun 4 half marathons and a few 10ks. I'm currently pregnant so running is 2 minute SLOW intervals right now to keep my HR in check.
    I borrow HungryRunnerGirl's "I can do hard things" mantra.
    I'd really just like to go to a nice beach. Its been a while.

    This is such a fun event Amanda! I'm a life-long west coaster (many towns from San Diego to BC) who loves to hike outdoors (daily if I could!), run on the treadmill, and unleash my inner yogi in secrecy (DVD's all the way!). Hmm, I probably need a mantra, but I'm a decent self-motivator, so I "just do it". My travel bucket list is looong. I've never been anywhere in Asia or Australia, so those two are up there.

It’s true, I’ll never stop talking about the warm up 😂. But right now the idea that running is HOPEFUL really strikes a chord.💜

We show up mile after mile always looking to what’s ahead and what’s possible.

Which one hits home for you?

AVOID HITTING THE WALL (save this and review befor AVOID HITTING THE WALL (save this and review before races) -AKA Bonking. UK friends giggle at that, but it’s a term just like fartlek.
.
It’s that painful moment when your mind tells your legs to stop and it feels like there’s nothing you can do to turn the tides. It leaves emotional scars!🥵

WHAT TO DO!
1️⃣Train differently - seems obvious, but consistent training that follows a plan which progressively and smartly builds your miles and strength and speed...ya it works.

2️⃣Fuel, fuel, fuel - force yourself to eat before races and long runs even if not hungry.
.
Starting fueling sooner than you think you need to and keep doing it. During races your body is running on more carbs and needs that steady flow of energy.
.
🧠 Your brain functions on CARBS, stop depriving it or it will tell you to stop running. If food while running is an issue for you, checkout something like @genucan.

3️⃣Pacing - Stop going out too fast because you’re excited, it absolutely catches up to you. Ideal is even pacing start to finish.

4️⃣Pay attention to your brain. @fitzgerald.matt in How Bad Do You Want it does a great job of showing how the brain can limit performance if you don’t know what’s happening up there.

5️⃣Recover better - Stop over training and give your body tools to help it destress from all the work...the best one is SLEEP. I also love @resiliencecbd to help with nerves prior to a race and quality sleep during training.

❓❓Helpful?? Have more race day questions?? Or an epic story of hitting the wall?? I wanna know.❓❓

🥳For the next 30 days in the Virtual Run Club we’ll be going hard on all the pre-hab work for hips, glutes and abs. Because running isn’t just about the miles.
//
That’s one of the reasons I’ve been consistently doing @insidetracker bloodwork since 2015.
.
It’s helped me identify low Vitamin D causing fatigue or catch my wayyy high cortisol to embrace easy runs as key part of the process.

3 CORE MOVES

You can use these as a progression or do all three, they’ll target the hips, glutes and core in different ways with each variation.

Aim for 15 reps prior to a run or do multiple rounds as part of a workout!

1️⃣Side Plank Kneeling Hip Raise - Really focus on your core engaging to raise up and keeping your elbow under your shoulder.

2️⃣Side Plank Kneeling Leg Raise - Again core should be tight to keep hips lifted, not sagging towards the ground. Then focus on your hip and glute to raise the top leg.

3️⃣Straight Leg Side Plank Leg Raise - Engage the core to keep hips high and press the bottom foot in to the ground to really engage your glutes. Slow and steady to remain stable while raising and lowering top leg.
