It should come as no surprise that my monthly motivation round up has taken on a predictable format.
I LOVE talking running and I LOVE consistency. A merger of the two is as expected as the post Halloween sugar hangover happening in households around America this morning.
I wish this chart from AnytimeFitness had been tattooed on my forehead as a teen, it would have drastically cut down on my chubby years…I do love me some sugar.Anyhow, back to the topic at hand!!!
Every month, I find myself testing out new foods, gear and reading books which might be just the thing you’ve been looking for or at least the thing you’ve been wondering about, so without further ado let’s turn your running motivation up a notch.
This months featured gear is one I started telling you about last month in an epic post on understanding body fat, along with a tool to measure it at home called the Skulpt AIM. Least you think I share things and don’t use them, I wanted to provide an update!
Skulpt AIM update
When I first got the Skulpt AIM, I’d also done a bod pod test which confirmed my fears that all my running and my low protein intake were resulting in skinny fat. Though I have been out of the country 3 out of the last 8 weeks I have indeed seen my body fat drop 3% already and my MQ improve (muscle quality score)
And uhh no I wasn’t this happy during the workout with My House Fitness. How have I made the changes?
- I finally took in what all of those smart nutritionists were saying about protein intake and oddly while traveling I found it easier than ever to get in enough protein, due to the great availability of fish and let’s be honest the morning breakfast buffet with eggs of all varieties.
- I not only did body weight moves while traveling, but I also started to incorporate 2 strength training sessions each week that focused on very low reps and heavier weights. When I say this is a short session, I mean like 20 minutes including abs and my lunge matrix for the IT Band. This is honestly the first time in years I’ve started to see a a real shift in my muscles.I love that I can measure per muscle group to see specifically what’s working!! Sweetsauce.
The associated smartphone app is what allows you to track long term progress. It’s made phenomenal strides since they first launched a year or so ago and now I can’t recommend this tool enough, if fat loss is a goal.

I am super picky when it comes to adding bars to my training routine…but a new one has passed the test because it’s so natural…and umm nut butter doesn’t hurt!
Ok so they didn’t put my face or my name on it like the last two round ups, but it’s good enough to make the cut anyways! I LOVE when someone sends me something that could actually go BAD. Yup, that means it’s nothing but real whole foods! My taste buds are in love and my body is very, very happy. Here’s a quick break down
- Gluten free
- Nut butter base (I’m sold already!)
- No preservatives
- 7-17g of protein
- Contains 20 super foods from ground powders
- Some do contain nonfat milk as part of the protein, so dairy free friends definitely check the label
Happy to say these are pretty easy to find from Whole Foods to Costco!!Running fuel, a motivating book and an Apple Watch #giveaway?! Time for October Running… Click To Tweet
This months book is of course one that will motivate you to run, but in a slightly different way.
If you’ve ever thought your coach was hard…this will make you look at them like a cuddly pink teddy bear. While many of us might never want to have a drill sergent living in the room next to us waking us at all hours, forcing us to run in blizzards and leap in to froze lakes…
…as runners…we can all relate!
“I have a complete stranger living in my apartment; I’m getting up super early and running every day when it’s freezing. I think some people wished they could do it but they never would. The will to keep doing this and the will to put myself through this is what people think is crazy, and I’m paying for this, literally and metaphorically.”
In fact here is a peak at DAY 1 of training!!! After running 6 miles…time for pull ups
“Seventeen! Cool, that’s my max number. I didn’t think I could even do that. Amazing! Let’s head back upstairs.”
As I start to look up, SEAL is staring at me with a blank expression . . . deadpan. “We’re going to stay here until you do a hundred.”
“I can’t do a hundred. That’s impossible,” I say.
“You better find a way,” he says to me like a father might tell his son to clean his bedroom. “You got a shitty-ass attitude.”
I admit until reading this book I didn’t know who Jesse was and yet now I’m wondering HOW I didn’t know who he was and I really want him for a friend! He pushes boundaries, he’s thinks quick and he always gets what he wants! He cofounded Marquis Jet, helped pioneer the coconut water craze with Zico coconut water, is a former rapper on MTV and runs ultra marathons, while also supporting his wife Spanx founder Sara Blakely.
With the sun remaining in hiding for longer each day, I wanted to share with you one more bonus piece of gear that might help get you over the hump of dark early mornings!!
Night Runner 270
Those of you who follow RunToTheFinish on Facebook saw that I took a nosedive once again last week during my run. I even had these shoe lights sitting on the counter and just didn’t put them on…sigh, silly girl. After ripping my hands to pieces, I snapped them on for the next morning. I admit it took a little fidgeting because I could get one to stay on and the other not so much.
“The patent-pending bi-lateral ‘wing’ design guarantees 270-degrees of visibility up to 30 meters.”
- Super light weight
- Up to 8 hours of light
- Ensures you are visible to cars
- USB recharging
- Nice hands free option
Overall love the concept, I just need to test out better how to get it to stay on my right foot. I’m not sure if I land harder, kick weird or what!
