This weekend was all about stepping back from everything that has been going on to unwind. This would not have happened if my friend hadn’t come to town…so I am forever grateful to her because it was a great reminder to take advantage of the amazing things that South Florida has to offer.
Most folks know Miami Beach, but locales will tell you the real place to go is on Key Biscayne. It offers areas of Palm Trees for shade, quiet, grassy areas and grills! This beach is definitely more family friendly and you’ll often find huge birthday parties or other events going on which still ensures there is plenty of great people watching.
MIAMI SPA MONTH
August is a spectacular time to visit Miami due to the annual Miami Spa month program! It gives you the chance to try out some of the best places at huge discounts…and trust me Miami has no shortage of upscale spa’s to meet any need.
Last year I enjoyed Canyon Ranch, but decided to explore the famous FoutaineBleu on Miami Beach. Our package included a Swedish Massage and access to all of the onsite amenities which include a hot tub, mineral pool, waterfall showers, eucalyptus steam room and the ever popular outdoor pools with live DJ’s.
As expected you cannot take pictures inside the spa, so I tried to snag a few from around the property to give you an idea of this great resort. It definitely feels like a get away in the city where you can spend all day relaxing or if partying is more your style the pool area will NOT disappoint with many of Miami’s famous lounging there.
How can you end a day in Miami without seafood? This little out of the way restaurant is possibly one of the best things I have found in Miami because it’s not a tourist trap you will actually get fresh fish at a great price. Located on the historic Miami riverfront, Casablanca Seafood Bar and Grill is attached to…surprise Casablanca Fish Market. With the great river front seating you can actually see all of the boats and feel a great connection to where your food is coming from.
In ordering the seafood paella, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a dish overflowing with more seafood than rice! I included squid, scallops, shrimp and tasted divine! If that wasn’t enough to make my mouth water, the great wait staff also brought out a special birthday dessert (tiramisu) for my visiting friend. Singing and clapping never hurt to make a meal feel even more special.
KEY LARGO SNORKELING
We topped off the weekend with a snorkeling adventure in Key Largo…unfortunately for me Tropical Storm Emily created some seriously rough waters and I spent most of the time trying not to make a mess in my snorkeling mask…but it was “better” to be in the water than on the boat where you could feel the movement even more.|
Sea Dwellers is one of many companies offering snorkeling trips out of Key Largo. If you haven’t booked one in advance, don’t worry you will find a company that can squeeze you in and often at some really cheap rates if you are willing to drive up to the docks where they take out passengers.
The crew was fantastic about pointing out areas to see things, notes on how to avoid the huge jellyfish population we encountered and where to hang your head if you were one of the motion sick passengers. Minus the rough waters, the ride alone out to the snorkeling grounds was worth the trip. Pure blue skies and nothing but water for miles…it topped off a relaxing weekend in just the right way!
Anyone else out there get motion sickness? That’s why I’m a runner folks, two feet firmly on the ground keeps it from moving. It’s been awhile since I have spent a whole weekend doing nothing I “had” to do and only things that were fun…very good indeed.
