In honor of the Clean Eating challenge I thought it would be good to review a couple of options that make getting fruits and veggies easier, tastier and cheaper. This weekend I attended the Des Moines farmer’s market while visiting David’s family and it took every ounce of restraint not to fill up bags to overflowing with produce.
Do you have a picky eater? Take them to the farmer’s market, it’s hard not to fall in love with vegetables when you see the bright colors and the beautiful display.![]()

Unfortunately we had eaten breakfast shortly before our farmer’s market trip or I would have had some detox juice and probably breakfast burrito! I was so impressed with the number of organic and cage free/hormone free farms. Miami hasn’t jumped on the farmer’s market bandwagon to quite the extent that I have seen in other places.
Do you have a good farmer’s market near you?
COMMUNITY SHARE PROGRAMS
In 2010, I found an organic CSA or buying club via LocalHarvest.org for which I paid $36 a week. Here is a sample week: Pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, kale, swiss chard, butter lettuce, cabbage, carrots, onions, celery, potatoes, yams, cauliflower.
HOW TO CUT A PINEAPPLE
Fresh pineapple is amazing and actually not that hard to cut…first off with the top and bottom…second slice down the sides…then just chop it up removing the core as you go. Don’t be afraid of trying new things during this challenge, you might just find a lot of things you didn’t realize you would love!

Loving this new Oakley top…hey it’s fun to look good from the back that way as I pass people…ok so I may have only been passing corn fields, but I looked cute doing it!
Overall: Feeling pretty good this week. My legs were tired off and on as I have really ramped mileage back up quickly, but I’m enjoying that time back on the road.
Favorite Workout: I had a blast running with Noelle. For two women with entirely different lives (Iowa/Florida, 3 kids/no kids) we have a lot in common and I loved getting to catch up with her.
iPod: Loaded up a few new audiobooks for the coming long runs…first up War Horse.
Are you joining me for the Clean Eating Challenge? Any recipes, planning or buying tips you want to share with everyone?? Let me know!!
