One of the personal challenges that I wanted to start on Jan 1 with my food journal was eliminating all animal products for a period of time and focusing on lots of greens. I didn’t promote this on the blog because I’m not committed 100% to a vegan lifestyle, but it was my way of getting back to unprocessed eating to clear out the holiday indulgences.
My major concern was fueling for running and then recovering! Luckily Vega had just sent me their awesome new Vega Sport line to try out. I was already using their original Vega Sport drink mix, but wanted to see what the rest of the line could do and since it is all formulated to work together to help you perform at your highest…well I was excited about that too!![]()

After using the protein powder a few times, I knew this was a protein powder that I liked and wanted to continue using. Since then I have already purchased a tub…see companies your samples do get us hooked. Anyhow Vega Sport recovery protein drink I can mix with water when I’m traveling and enjoy it…in fact yes I have it with me in San Fran to drink each day this week and for right after the Houston marathon. Most protein powders I just can’t stomach with water alone. When I was at home, this was a great addition to my daily green smoothie!
What makes it a recovery protein? “The recent innovation to Vega Sport Performance Protein comes from the addition of SaviSeed (sacha inchi) protein, a rich, plant-based source of the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is a key component of serotonin production(1). Serotonin—the feel good hormone—helps with the mental aspect of recovery” it also contains all the important Branch Chain Amino acids for repairing your muscles.![]()

The sport line also contains pre-workout drink mixes which will help to get you energized and ensure you have balanced electrolytes which is extremely important to prevent muscle cramps and provide you with the lasting endurance for long runs or intense intervals. I have long used the Vega Sport drink mix, but these were a little different than what I take on my training run. These mixes actually reminded me a little more of a fruit punch as the flavor is much stronger and more intense.
The Vega sport line also includes an Endurance Bar (great for you bikers/hikers) and a Recovery bar. Both contain greens which I love and have a taste that I was a-ok with. I know some folks do not like green bars, but these too me didn’t have that normal chalky taste, they were pretty chocolatey honestly.
The only piece of the line that just did not work for me was the gel. I think the raspberry and the texture just didn’t site right with me because otherwise I’m a fan of the ingredients themselves and I love the idea of a more natural gel.
Clearly I was provided these products for free to try, but the additional protein powder I’ve already purchased speaks to how much I liked it.
