Food Journal Day 1: Taking Stock

On day one of the Food Journal Challenge it is important to evaluate exactly where you are right now. We often know in a general sense that we get headaches frequently or our weight is up or down, but the idea behind the food journal is to better identify how food is affecting your life.  Remember that in Week 1 you don’t have to change anything, this is about getting a good understanding of where you are and what are your habits.

Here are details on joining the Food Journal Challenge and how a food journal can help improve your health.

EVALUATION
Take a moment to evaluate the following:
Weight
Skin clarity
Hair
Nails
Teeth/Gums
How do you feel about your current food choices?
How would you like to feel?
Are you taking any supplements? - Make sure to note these every day in your journal as well. You might find certain one’s actually don’t agree with your system.

ALLERGENS
Are you eating any commonly known allergens (the following account for 90% of food allergies):
Dairy
Egg
Nuts
Fish/Shellfish
Wheat
Soy

If you are eating any these and notice things like headaches, bloating, irritability throughout your journal take a moment to see if there is a consistent pattern. Maybe each night you have ice cream you wake up with a headache or each morning that you use soy milk you find later in the day you feel bloated.

DAILY JOURNAL
Decide today what things you want to record about your overall day and what things you need to record at each meal.  It will be important to be consistent so you can track patterns and use them to make changes later..you’ll have evidence to support your decision to change which will make it more powerful!

Here are some potential ideas:
Meal 1: Food, calories, where, hunger level, mood, did it satisfy you
ANT: Negative thought you notice happening throughout the day, write it down and turn it around. Yes your food journal can be about more than just food…your emotions impact your food choices so it’s a great chance to fix them too.
Veggies: How many servings, what were they
