Average US female runner?

Less than 24 hours until my birthday…I think it’s safe to say BIRTHDAY WEEKEND begins now!!!

In honor of turning 30 a very middle of the road age for runners, I thought I would see how I measure up to the average female runner. Ever wonder how you compare? I can't say as though I really did but going through this made me realize that my running has really changed in the last year because I finally started cross training! I also feel pretty confident that I’m too crazy to be average.

This is the typical "core" runner. Core runners are active adult participants who tend to enter running events, train year-round, and purchase 2-4 running shoes each year (From RunningUSA and inspired by DirtRoadRunner)

Average number of miles run per week: 21.9 - Lowest mileage in ages my avg is 32
66.1% describe themselves as ‘Frequent/Fitness Runners’ - I’d rather go with passionate, obsessive or something like that :)

    Half-Marathon (77.0%)

I would say those are all amazing reasons, but I lace up every day because I simply love it. I love how I feel proud of myself for every single run, no matter the pace…I love how strong I feel, I love well ok enough gushing… you get it.

Product Preferences:
Average number of running shoes purchased in last 12 months: 2.9 pairs --HA only 2.9, I’d say more like 10

    Champion (34.3%)
    Adidas (30.7%)
80.4% spent $100+ on running apparel in the last 12 months -- umm yes easily
59.6% purchased running apparel at a specialty running store -- Not as frequently because they are often higher

Anything surprise you about the average runner? Are you an average female runner? Really 2.9 shoes per year? Really?!

Whoa, that shoe number is crazy low! I'd say like 6 for me...that's like $500 on shoes alone! Geez! I wonder what I spend on running per year.

I'm older and started later than the avg runner, but i was surprised that i'm pretty much spot on for number of events in the past 12 months (7 for me too)

This is so cool! Some numbers are much higher than I would have expected and some are much lower. Happy early birthday!

Happy birthday weekend!!! Interesting numbers. I'm not sure I'd be willing to share all of that. ;o)

Not too many of the numbers surprise me. I'm a newer runner, but in most of the other categories, I'm fairly "average".

I'm actually not that surprised by the number of shoes. Average mileage is just 21.9 miles a week - which is 1139 miles a year. I'm going to guess that a lot of people stretch their shoes longer then they should, and that is still less then 400 miles per pair of shoes.

How fun is that! I'm 25 and only seriously started running last year- I'm going to look up the statistics for the 20's!

I loved reading those stats- I may have to steal this for a blog post down the line (and of course give you credit!!)

Have a graet birthday!!

Happy Birthday weekend!! 30 = 3 perfect 10s. :)

Those are pretty good statistics... the shoe one does surprise me a bit, I would've expected higher.

I loved all the stats in this post! Guess I was a late bloomer as I'm 36 and barely starting this journey. Happy birthday weekend!!

Nope, I'm much shorter than the average female runner, though I've done way more marathons and half-marathons and been running for a shorter amount of time.

I love this---it's cool to see how I stack up next to the "average" runner! HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEEKEND! You should celebrate for a whole week, that's what I would do!

2.9 shoes?? I'd be rich if I only had to buy that many per year! Oy.

Fascinating stats; I am definitely not the norm:
- didn't start running until I was 55 (last year)
- weighed over 200 lbs. at the start
- did 7 races my first year and already 10 this year
- started running as exercise/weight concerns, true, but now run because I love it
- 2.9 pairs in 12 months? HA!
Happy birthday, Amanda--I'll be running tomorrow!

Hm. The shoe thing is interesting. I honestly dont know a single person who runs in Asics. Maybe they sponsored your survey?

Happy Birthday! 30 is the new 20 ...

Happy Happy Birthday Weekend Amanda!

I think for marathons, your 30s are definitely your best years. You have so much to look forward too. Great things ahead for you.

Char said...

That was really interesting. It's nice to compare yourself with the average to see where you sit.

Welcome to 30!

Interesting stats - clearly I'm far too short to be a real runner :)

Tina @GottaRunNow said...

Hope you have the best 30th birthday! In the age category, I'm above average. ; ) I can't imagine not running - hope to be running when I'm 100!

Terzah said...

I'm pretty average, even down to being 38 years old (but I'm happy I weigh less!).

Happy Birthday! I got all 20 of my miles done today--the last three were slow but they are yours!!

Happy Birthday!
I got a few more years until I'm "average age" for a runner! Woo hoo!

Happy birthday and I think you are well ahead of the curve!

I don't get the 2.9 shoes per year! I only buy new shoes once in every two years, and I hate buying running shoes. I even wrote a whole post about it!

Otherwise I'm pretty average.

Happy 30th!!!!!! I hope you had an awesome birthday!!!! Love the stats, way to be brave!

I think you should challenge us to do this on our blogs. Since you didn't, I'll challenge myself and do it now :)
