The best thing about reviews…being able to do a giveaway for a great product, especially one’s that keep you safe.
AWARENESS
I have a new pair of headphones that will be traveling with me to all races and all late night runs alone. Auria headphones are specifically designed to sit outside your ear and therefore provide the ability to hear all the noises around you…unlike the one’s I normally wear that block it all out.
In fact if you look like this while putting them in…you are doing it WRONG.. they aren’t meant to be jammed in to your ear and had I read the directions I would have realized this right away.![]()
Crazy because it looks like they could just fall out right??? I’ve worn them up to 7 miles and they didn’t budge, but felt so much lighter than my normal headphones in my ears. The chord itself is heavier because it can be used to change to the next song or turn up volume. Another good thing about these is that without having taken the picture I never would have realized I have a mole behind that ear. ![]()
The MAJOR upside to these headphones is that because they site outside your ear you can hear the noise around you. This increases safety by allowing you to be more aware of cars, people and I suppose bears if that’s your kind of run. I also think I could actually bike with these and I never ever considered that a possibility with my other headphones, but it would totally help me ride farther.
That same upside is the reason, I will largely use them for races or when traveling. Unfortunately living in a downtown area it is so loud that I have to blare my iPOD to hear it when using these headphones. If you are one of the brave folks I see running with your iPhone strapped to your arm these will be great because of the control on the headphones.
FLASHY
Being aware of your surroundings is just part of being safe at night. You also need to help drivers see you…realize they are tired in the mornings and cranky after work, so looking for a runner is not on their mind.
If you don’t want to run around in full neon gear, like I did during the Ragnar Relay, I have a much cooler option for you. FlashBright stickers can be worn on your clothing, put on your bike, slapped on your skin I suppose if nude is your thing. ![]()

As noted earlier, I am putting together a giveaway that will include both the Auria headphones, the FlashBrite stickers…and soo much more good stuff, so stay tuned.
When running are you concerned that headphones drown out the noise around you? Do you bike with headphones? Do you wear reflective gear when it’s dark?

I am way too scared to bike with headphones. I want to hear everything! I might give those a try, though, if you can really hear everything around you!
Great to hear they stay in your ears! I am still running with the iPod headphones and they DO NOT stay in my ears while running! I will be signing up for the giveaway! :)
Can't wait for the giveaway... It sounds great!
I was sent a pair of these, I actually could not get one of them to stay put.. :(
the flash bright looks cool and very bright in the pictures! Yay for a giveaway!
If I'm going long distance without a friend, I will only wear one of my ear buds. It makes me too nervous to not be able to hear what is coming up behind me.
I use yurbuds, which I LOVE, but I usually run with the volume on low because they do block out so much sound!
Neat! I have a hard time with ear buds and I'm still running with the ones that came with my IPOD b/c of it. I do wear reflective clothing - I have a belt and also usually wear a headlamp and a flashing battery powered light on the back of the belt.
I run with headphones but NEVER bike. Biking is just too dangerous as it is. You have to be SO aware of your surroundings and the drivers who don't see you or choose not to see you.
I did have a scare on a walk the other day with headphones in. Some guy came running up behind me and I had no idea he was there until he was right on my heel. My dog made me turn to look and the guy stopped dead in his tracks and just dropped in behind me. I have no idea what he was up to, but it kind of freaked me out that I didn't hear him coming.
I love that there is a new option for ear phones. I've always had problems with earbuds (not just while exercising but in general they don't stay in my ears) so I go old school, or a slightly updated version anyway, with the Sony vertical-in-ear headphones. I've been pretty happy with those but it would be nice to have an alternative that didn't go over my head.
I just did a review on these earphones! I too, neglected to read the instructions at first… But they really are very nice.
Love your headband by the way.
I usually don't run with music because I like to hear what is going on around me - especially for safety and also to enjoy the sights/sounds of a great race.
This might be worth a try, though! Thanks for sharing and I will look forward to your giveaway.
I don't run with headphones at all. I usually run alone and I like to be able to hear everything around me, especially people coming up in me.
I love my Auria earphones! And I need some night running gear. Thanks for the review!
I have to run with music. I'm definitely a space case. Without music my mind wanders too much and I have no pace. These Auria headphones are awesome! Definitely cool that you can hear ambient noise and that it has buttons to switch songs.
SUAR reviewed these yesterday. They must be the new "it" item.
reflective clothing is a must for me! Even when I have the reflective stuff on and its light out I know some drivers don't see me so I have to be careful! I never run outside with headphones because I just like to hear the cars coming and my surroundings.
The earphones look like a great product. I need to check them out.
I never cycle with headphones I just don't think it is safe, unless I'm sitting on the trainer, but running is a whole other story. I love running with music or podcasts, but I try to keep the volume down so I can still be aware of my surroundings.
When I running at night, I rely on the reflectivity on my running clothes and I have a cheap (crappy) blinky bike light that I wrap around my pony tail. I get a lot of stares, but it works great. I never bike with music (it's illegal in nyc anyway), but I always run with music. We too are a loud city, so I want to hear my music, but I also need to hear what's going on around me. I will sometimes just pull one ear out.
Biking with headphones is illegal, at least in Florida.
I love the review you have given on both of these products. Needed purchases!
I just avoid running/biking in the dark. Along with the other hazards, you're more likely to miss kicking a cat (almost happened to me once) or tripping over a rock/pebble and having a nasty spill...
Of course, that's because I'm lucky enough to live somewhere that has plenty of daylight...
I bought those headphones at my half marathon last weekend! They had them at the expo. I had forgotten mine at home...and I'm totally glad I did!! I loved running with them...and having the ability to quickly mute them from the cord if I needed to. I also loved that I could hear everything around me.
Also, you can change the outside of them and personalize them. I think you go to auria.com and buy the personalization panel things there. They gave one set free at the expo- I got a silhouette of a runner-girl in pink for mine.
Love!
Great reviews and very timelt for me. Thanks
Great safety tips - I keep the music low when it's dark, but something like this would be even better. I love the glow stickers!
I know this bad but sometimes I need to drown out my surroundings, especially when I hit a rough patch during a run. But I do that during a race where the course is closed - not like that makes my habit any more acceptable :) and yes, I rock my reflective vest. I don't care if it makes me look like a traffic cop, it keeps me alive!
My headphones ALWAYS fall out, and then I lose my focus when I'm running; so because of that, I tend to stay inside on the treadmill. I'll definitely try them out
