A sensible person is one who makes decisions based on logic and reasoning. This has therefore lead me to conclude the following: A sensible person does NOT
….pay lots of money to run 26.2 miles and farther
….run/walk/bike more miles in a week than they drive
…pack a suitcase for vacation with equal amounts workout gear and casual clothing
…wake up early on said vacation to enjoy a 10 mile jaunt through a new place
…wake up early every Saturday to meet a group of also insensible people for an exhaustive workout
Some days I’m pretty glad that I’m not a sensible person…after reading Marshall Ulrich’s book I actually think maybe I am completely sand and rational.
Running on Empty: An Ultramarathoner's Story of Love, Loss, and a Record-Setting Run Across America is the newest book that has gotten my running legs and running mind ready to go.
”Once, I asked a physician friend of mine, a cardiologist, if a person could run himself to death - I wanted to know how hard I could push myself.” I feel like this one sentence says it all about the mentality he had going in to the Guinness World Record.
Marshall has run Badwater 4 times, as in 4 times in a row without stopping.
Marshall has run the Leadville 100 and then 3 hours later started Pikes Peak.
Marshall at age 57 decided it was time to run across America, which is 117 marathons back to back in case you are interested.
This was truly a fascinating read and a real insight in to the mind of an ultra marathon runner. If you have ever complained about marathon training, I can’t help but think reading through some of his adventures will simultaneously inspire you and make you feel that your runs are suddenly a piece of cake. There is no great way to break this book down in to 3 short summary sentences because it’s about the journey of running, of life and of perseverance through it all…so the best I can say is you need to read it.
As you know, I have done a lot of book reviews and adore reading anything running, but they don’t always inspire and don’t always make you want to read every page. Sometimes it’s shameful but… I skim. Not this time. The story was just too crazy to miss a beat.

ooooh, ohhhh! me, me. I'm not sensible because I run all my training runs sub 7. But it's FUN!
Sounds like a great read!
I think I'm a totally sensible running person....perhaps that's what makes me....um....not?
I'll post on my blog sidebar.
When I got pregnant "reducing my running" meant doing half marathons instead of marathons. :)
i'd consider myself not sensible because i'd rather do a 20 mile training run than right a 5 page paper. sounds like a great book! i'll make sure to tweet the giveaway!
I'm not sensible because:
I got up at 4am so I could run 18 miles before a day at Disneyworld.
Found room for running clothes and shoes on a European vacation with very strict luggage size/weight limits so that I could run in Florence, Paris, and London.
I'm loving girlevolving's comment! I want that to be me one day!
I'm definitely not sensible because when I think about traveling for work, it's mostly how to plan how to get my runs in without interfering with the reason for traveling.
in parenting my friends call me "Sense and Reason"... in running I fall squarely into the category "Runner First, Logical Thinker Second". Like having a 3 mile run on the schedule and running 10, or running 40K in two days to honor a friend's 40th birthday. You know, the usual stuff...
I'm not sensible because I have back issues and I still run.

I am totally not sensible because I plan my life around when I have to do my training runs and will run in a snow storm to get my runs done!
I am not sensible because I am planning my summer road trip around my running. We are stopping in some strange places just because they have a run i would like to compete it.
Posted your giveaway to my sidebar.
Instead of going out barhopping for my 21st birthday I ran a marathon. And I'm doing it again for my 26th. 26 miles for 26 years.
I'm not sensible because I spend money on running shoes before I spend money on work shoes.
I Tweeted this Giveaway ... I'm really excited!
Hmm I'm not sensible because I spend more money on running stuff than I do work clothes!!
I'm not sensible because when you walk in my apartment, the first thing you see is 4 different pairs of running shoes. Weird. LOVE YOUR BLOG!
I'm not sensible because the thing I'm most excited about for an upcoming vacations is all the hours I will have to run and bike!
Thanks for the giveaway!
Um, hello - I'm injured! I was not a sensible runner due to being WAY overtrained and thus landing a major injury :(. Never again!
Posting on my blog!
I am not a sensible runner because every day that I do I am taking a risk!!! Both times I have herniated my L7 disc have been while exercising & running is something I have never REALLY had the courage to tackle. But here I am, DOING IT...praying the whole time!

I'm not sensible because usually there is no rhyme or reason to my training. I squeeze in the runs when I can...some weeks that means 3 five milers and a 10+ on the weekend, sometimes it means a 9 on Wednesday and a 12 on Saturday, last week it was a 7 on Monday and that's it. I also tend to push the hydration issue....knowing I can run 12 miles w/out water as long as the temperature is right is great, though probably not the smartest choice.
I'm not a sensible person because I'm always trying to figure out how I'm going to get my next run in. Especially during planting and harvest time.

Because I'm already trying to figure out my 50k race..and I'm just running my first marathon this weekend and its on trail in what looks like a mudfest!! :)
Its been tweeted!
Oooh! I really wanna read this! Retweeted!
I'm not a sensible person because I was born with a dislocated hip and told growing up that running was something I couldn't do. But I defied all expectations and did a marathon on my 25th birthday! I'm not a sensible person because even though I've suffered 3 injuries in 6 months, not only will I never stop running, my new dream is to progress from marathons to ultras this year. I'm not a sensible person because my runs are just as likely to be on sand or trail as they are to be on the pavement; my fuel is whatever happens to be around me (I've been known to swig juice on the run and eat m and m's), and I'm more likely to run until my iPod runs out because I don't own a watch! :)
i continued to train while in PT and will be running a marathon next week. doctor said not to sign up for races so far out…i didn’t listen. already signed up for races in january!!

What makes me a not sensible runner is ... um, because i do everything different than the books (and everyone on here!) say to do. (I eat a sandwich 2 minutes before i run, i follow NO training plan, i don't do long runs, tempo runs...i just run!)
I weight 30 pounds more than I should and still run...not fast, but whatever. My doctor suggested I stop running because I have a tendency to hurt my knee and have a herniated disc and 3 bulging discs. I told her I didn't START running until AFTER the back injury!
I wake up at 4:30 5 days a week to run or do a workout before work. I also haven't bought any new "real" clothes in almost two years - I only ever buy more running clothes!
I spend more money on workout clothes than work and casual clothes combined!
I used to think running for fun was an oxymoron, now I are one of those crazy people.
I'm not a sensible person because I spend more on running clothes, gear, books, and gadgets than pretty much anything else . . . I have a hard time going for a walk without breaking into a run . . . I run races even though I know I will never win . . . I think it's FUN to spend an afternoon out on a trail running just because.
Not in the contest 'cause I already have a copy, but yes, he was (is?) not the most sensible person I've ever come across. A definite different mindset.
(heehee I saw that candy wrapper dress too. funny)
Others might like that 346 days of running including 5 50ks and 1 50 miler might make me not sensible. As for me, it makes perfect sense!
Glad you like the book - I concur. I've already read it.
lol, I don't think any runners I know are sensible.
I running into everything, even when Im not training for something.
That and I always find myself trying to PR, even though I know sometimes it's really not the right conditions
I'm a non sensible runner because when I finally get a babysitter (which isn't very often)...I use my FREE time to go running without a jogging stroller
I posted this on my blog - http://dailyvitaminf.blogspot.com/2011/04/total-giveaway-tuesday-10.html
I get up at an ungodly hour to run....and when I'm done I think..."Cool I can fit in another this afternoon!"
I'm posting this on my blog!!
I'm not sensible because I referred to a long run as "just" 23km last weekend. Then I laughed when I realized it was still over a half marathon - ah, how far I've come.

haha! This is great Amanda! We runners are not sensible at all!
I'm not sensible b/c I schedule vacay's around fun places to run! Running on Vacay?! Wouldn't have it any other way!
I'm tweeting you up!
FB too!
Oh, I've heard of this book and I want it!
I am so not a sensible runner. I overtrained myself straight into ITB issues from hell....and still paying for it eight months later.
It's not sensible to run in freezing rain because you gace to get the runs in. Or to run with the flu. Or to run on lunch breaks that are too short to shower but go to work stinky. Or to refuse to put on sneakers for less than 5 km. Not sensible at all.
I am completely sensible when I wake up at 6:00 AM on a Saturday to run 20 miles, or some weeks just an easy 12-14 :)
I'm not sensible because a blizzard with whiteout conditions doesn't mean I shouldn't run, it just means I should strap yaktraks to my shoes.
Shared it on Facebook :-).
Posted to my blog:)
I am not sensible because I am a runner with scoliosis-had surgery for it when I was younger, have metal rods on my spine, have arthritis in my lower back joints, and have been told I should "probably try swimming" by my doctors. But I keep on runnin! To say I am injury prone is an understatement, but I keep trying. Run, injure, rehab, repeat!
Well, I think I'm a sensible runner, but my husband might disagree. We just found a great place to snorkel about 15 miles from our house. I mentioned as we drove home that if we went there on the weekend and he gave me a couple hour head start I could run and meet him there. I think he said something about that taking the relaxation out of it. :)
I am not a sensible runner because I run when I'm injured sometimes!
Tweeted the giveaway!

Just popping in to thank you for sharing your thoughts on RUNNING ON EMPTY with your readers!
I'm not a sensible runner because I think going out for three hours on the trails doesn't require fuel - and then wonder why I'm starving when I finish!
Haha... yeah, I personally think someone like you is SANE, but someone like him is definitely not haha.
Not listening to my body when it says "take a break" makes me a sometimes not so sensible runner!
Your list is so true! I am not sensible when I reschedule all my free time around my running schedule.
Sensible: running in nice weather.
Unsensible: running in below 0 weather, but I do it anyway!

I am not sensible because I spend too much money on running gear and I obsess about getting all of my training runs in each week. I am not a nice person if I don't get my run.
Posted this on my blog.
I am not sensible because I can rationalize any ailment as a reason to keep running (I can run the fever off, my knee feels better after 5-6 miles), and use the very same ailment as an excuse to not to host my in-laws (hunny, I could be contagious, sweetie, I really need to elevate and ice in peace). You decide if that's sensible or not....
I tend to ignore the pain in my foot until I can't run for a while and after it feels great I come back slow for a coupe weeks, then take off and the pain comes back-well, this cycle has actually only happened once, but I'm in the pain just came back session because I did too much the past two weeks. What a dumbass I am...
