Opinions Wanted Friday: Race Calendar

In the past, I have often picked one or two major races to focus on for the year and should a 5k come along here or there I might sign up.  BUT I see many of you who plan out a complete race calendar starting at the end of the year… I see the advantages to this from a mental perspective and training plan.

Do you plan out a full year of races?  Why or why not?

HBBC
We now have over 210 participants for the Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge!! I am out trying to drum up even more prizes to ensure I can really motivate you all, so if you know of anyone please send them my way!  I think we are around a value of $400 in prizes currently.  I will try to post the list next week.

Happy birthday my love and good luck to all those racing this weekend. I will be toeing the line with the same jitters and hope we all come home with smiles for a day spent doing what we love.Capture

Hi Amanda,
I usually have my base races planned for the year and then just fill in with whatever works with my life:)

You looks so good in that picture! I love that red halter on you:)

I am still on the fence about the bootie buster...I love the idea but don't want to start and not be able to finish. We are crazy busy in the fall and winter due to my daughter's three crazy sports. It is hard to make time for myself. You just watch, I will cave and eventually sign up:)

Have a great weekend!

I have a basic idea of races I would like to run for the year but I never make it official until about a month before because sometimes plans change and things come up.

I'm new to running races but I have already planned out next year's calendar. Of course there's flexibility - not like I actually signed up for everything. I like doing it this way so I will be able to train for half marathons & triathlons.

look at that kitty, what a life!

i have an "idea" of races for the upcoming year but i'm not a crazy planner when it comes to races. which is weird b/c i plan every second of every day out!

I like to plan out the big races but then add in smaller ones that fit into my schedule or just sound like fun. I'll usually decide what my goal is for those smaller ones a week or two ahead.

Good luck on Sunday and have fun!

I don't necessarily plan all my races for the year (case in point - Philly marathon!), but in terms of adventure racing, our team sends around a calendar filled with all the potential races and then we sift through it and figure out who will do which, when, and with whom. I guess there's just a lot more to coordinate when you're organizing a team, rather than planning as an individual

I plan the next year and even start thinking about the following year after that just because training is something you have to plan for as well. I'm already reg'd for two spring marathons, hotels booked, airline tix purchased and planning on a 50k in July and my first international marathon fall 2011. The group I run with likes to do races together so we plan ahead. We are already talking about a European vacation/marathon trip together for 2012. Thinking about a 100 miler for 2012 (those kind of races you really need to plan ahead for!!!)

I even plan out the smaller races like 5k, 15k and half marathons as well. I keep a calendar in my purse that is full of races dates, registration cutoff dates and my training schedule. I have it all planned out ;)

This past year I found each race a month or two beforehand, with the plan to race once a month. For 2011 though, I went through every race calendar I could find, and set up a schedule. Most of the races don't have dates yet, and my schedule doesn't include the odd 5K or 10K I might run, but at least I have a plan.

good luck this weekend!

i haven't ever planned a whole year out. i usually start with a goal race and then find supplements to it along the way. once i see how i perform at the goal race i set my next goals and find another race.

Good luck on your race! I hope all goes well for you!

I try and plan the year out but it ALWAYS ends up changing so I don't even know why I bother!! :) LOL!

Good luck this weekend!!!

I love to just do races as they come up. There are some though that I have to plan ahead for so I don't lose out because they get sold out!!

I am definitely one to plan out the whole year. There are so many races that I love and try to run each year... plus I like to incorporate a lot into my training for "A" races. Takes a lot of planning so I like to get them all (most) on a calendar early. Plus... prices go up and they sell out EARLY around here!

P.S. Happy Birthday David!
P.P.S. Good luck at the half!! Have fun! :)

No, I don't plan out a full year, just marathons. Other races I do as they come along and if I'm in the mood.

I'm fairly new to racing but have been trying to lay out a plan for all of 2011 - I figure it gives me targets to shoot for, but I probably won't sign up for all of them until the dates gets closer.

Good luck this weekend!

i usually like to do the same races each year so that is kind of a default. but i also have a LOT of fun going through tons and tons of races that are right near me and just writing them down so i can see what i COULD/ MIGHT do. it takes a lot of time but is a lot of fun too!

I saw on twitter you're looking for HBBC companies to sponsor. Have you tried RoadID?

Good luck in your race tomorrow!

First of all, you look gorgeous in your pic!!
I only plan my huge races (i.e. Boston and hopefully St. George) in advance. The others I just plan according to how I am feeling and how much they cost:)

GOOD LUCK IN YOUR RACE!! Can't wait to read about it!

I do a rough idea but nothing set in stone. I just try and play it by ear. How I'm feeling, how the weather is going, where my training is and so on. :)

I don't really plan. I have some key races I like to do and then whatever comes along and I can work the family around.

Happy Birthday to your hubby! What an amazing day to be born but really it was our mom's who deserve the celebrating!

Run strong this weekend!

There aren't too many races in my area, so racing means travelling, which takes a bit of planning. It also takes money so I don't race too much!

I plan the whole year out, but that's simply because my husband is the manager for his team and has to work out the budget ahead of time and I need to plan my races around/with his racing. We usually add races here and there, but know for the most part what we'll be doing before the season starts!

Thanks on the logo help - that did the trick :)!

I plan out my big races, marathons and ultras only. Anyhting else that comes a long I still do but they were not part of my "yearly" race calendar. With most of the biggest races you HAVE to plan out at least a year in advance. FOr 2011 i'm already signed up for 4 marathons and 2 half marathons, not for the sake of planning but bc i KNOW they will sell out! SO i guess, for me, planning a whole year isn't for organizational/training reasons, its more so i can actualyl get INTO the races i want to do, since they are selling out so fast these days.

I have a list of races I'd love to do in an ideal world. Typically finances dictate that I can't do them all, but they are part of my training/race plan. Sometimes if I can't make a particular race I will do my own race - set a distance and time it/run it just like a race. Not quite as fun, but it keeps me satisfied and on track.

Jill said...

woohooo, good luck girl!! Oh, but you so do NOT need luck - you HAVE Done all the work now go out there and remain confident you can do it! Trust your training and the rest will fall into place!! Can't wait to hear about it!

YAY for all things David :).

I sort of have a year long race calendar - mainly because I run the same local races each year. Every once in a while I throw in a big city race that requires some planning. It is just easier for me to have a full calendar set up. It also helps to have the calendar when it comes to work schedules and adding up race fees!

Jamie said...

I definitely do not plan out my race calendar very much in advance. I am not that organized and there is too much last minute life stuff that happens that would cause me to miss the race/lose money. I have 1 or 2 big races I want to run and kind of fit everything in else as the year goes on.

Good luck this weekend and happy birthday to your hubs!!!

Since this will only be my third season of racing, I can't say what I usually do. But, I do know there are races I am hoping to do next year, and have a list written down with those races.

For me, it's mostly dependent on finances. If I have the money to pay for the race I want to do before it sells out, then I will register. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for 2 races I really wanted to do this past year.

I just found your blog and am so excited for the challenge. I don't have a blog so I signed up at Daily Mile. I haven't been running that long and don't expect to keep up with anyone but hoping it keeps me accountable through the holidays and in my 5 mile race training after Christmas. Wondering what headband you wear when you run--mine always seem to slip off the back! Thanks!

I try to plan for the bigger races I want to do, but inevitably I end up adding in a few smaller, "fun" races throughout the year.
