Lessons (re)Learned

I learned a few things this weekend…or relearned a few things in some cases.

LONG RUNS NEED FUEL
I couldn’t pinpoint the cause but I knew on Friday my stomach felt overly full and by Saturday morning there was no use trying to eat or drink prior to running…uh so I didn’t.  Then I also chose not to carry water…for 10 miles in the feels like of 95 degree weather we so love and adore at 6AM in Miami.

The run started out just fine, but I ran out of gas and then literally almost passed out when we finished. I haven’t had that occur in a very very long time…like back when I was trying to lose weight with really awful methods in college long time.

No worries, I just plopped down on Thomas’s trunk and of course found plenty of effort to smile! Yes Dan and Thomas are laughing at me because all it takes is a camera to get me perked up. trainingwithDantraining
I AM NOT A NAVY SEAL
So David really loves the Discovery channel and all nature of things like that…lately we have been watching Surviving the Cut.  It depicts men being INTENSELY trained to be things like Nave Seals…so of course while watching it I get all psyched to go push myself really hard. Umm this has on occasion completely backfired (see long run above where I tried to push the pace minus fuel)…apparently I am not a Navy SEAL.  Dan however was indeed thinking about being a SEAL and now scares me a little…he only pretends to run our pace, really he is much faster.

TALL BIKES NOT LARGE BIKES
I need a 56cm-58cm women’s road bike…this meant nothing to me for awhile, but now I get it. They rarely even order this size in men’s, I have abnormally long legs and they NEVER carry them in women’s. They also pleasantly call them TALL bikes and not LARGE bikes because as the gentleman pointed out I am not a large person…um thanks? :)

Lesson learned…eat and drink appropriately for runs so that you don’t pass out and can do the yoga class you so love.  Lesson learned…I will need to order a bike sight unseen because of these amazingly wonderful long legs.

Did you learn anything important this weekend?

Oh my goodness, be careful with your hydration! I've never heard of "tall" bikes before. I guess that's one new thing I learned this weekend, so thanks for that :)

Almost passing out is not a good thing! So glad your're okay- don't forget Nutrition for your long runs!

Glad you are okay after the hydration/fueling mismanagement. I'm always re-learning lesson's like that ;)

This is something I forget too. Did a 30 mile bike ride/7-mile run two weeks ago and forgot any "nutrition". Only had water on my bike ride. But it was cool, so I got lucky.

i learned than i am faster than I think and pushing yourself is OK.

I can't believe you went out for 10 in that heat without carrying anything. Don't mess with hydration, dehydration is scary

Wow...10 miles without water in the heat would have been rought...glad you are OK!

well, it looks like there would have been plenty of help around if you had passed out :) good thing you didn't though. lesson learned!

it can suck (technical term :)) to learn lessons that way---but at least you were ok!!

and surrounded by a nice tattooed helper at that :)

I think because I've been doing long runs for so long, and I know what to do and what not to do, that I KNOW what I am doing. But at least once every few months I forget something important ... like hydrating, thinking it's only a shorter long run.

Then the long run reminds me I just think I know it all, I have to actually do it all.

Hope you are feeling better. Drink lots!

be careful out there in that heat!! i haven't heard of that show, i definitely need to check it out!

10 miles with no water?! That's crazy talk!! Glad you learned your lesson. This week I learned how taking a step back one week could help me run farther, better the next week. I always have a hard time with that one, but it's true!

It seems I am always figuring out hydration. This Fri I ran 13 with only 32 oz and was fine. I tried the same on Sunday (in KC) and ran out at 6.5.

That show sounds like something my husband would like!

I learned that I really don't need to get water during a 5k race! It slows you down, especially if you are not coordinated enough to drink and run at the same time. Water at the end, not in the middle!

there is no training benefit to training without hydration. In fact not only do you dehydrate but you are unable to push yourself as hard during quality work outs. Be careful out there

As for your bike- I got a specialized women's 57 cm earlier this year. I love it! it makes biking even more fun, I feel so much more comfortable (and so fast!). Men and women have different proportions (women have proportionally longer legs to begin with, then those of us who have even longer legs proportionally get into trouble when we buy based on our height) so some bike makers have started making women's versions of their men's bikes. It doesn't mean that that because you're a woman (or man) you have to only try women's (men's) bikes, but its something to keep in mind
