FOR FUN
I have to admit my for fun books got tossed this month in favor of e-commerce articles, Runners World, Shape magazine and other random articles. No fear though I still have 4 other great reads to share with you!
FOR SPIRIT ![]()
The Shack by William Young
I pray to God like I talk to a friend. It rambles a little, feels very close and familiar, but I don’t put a face to God or expect an actual answer. This book takes you on a journey with a man who sees and talks to God (as large African American woman, as an older male, as a ethereal spirit) and in the process reminds us that life is not about living by some commandments, but about loving each other unconditionally. I think this is an interesting read for just about anyone. It will keep your attention and in the process lift you up.
Vegetable, Animal, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
![]()
I listened to this audiobook during my training over the last month. Each time I would get all riled up to stop eating all processed foods or anything not local, but realistically I am not one for wholesale change overnight. So instead, I am taking a lot of the interesting tidbits I learned about why I should respect farmers and reminders about how much better FRESH food tastes to make ongoing changes. I heard about this book for a very long time before actually selecting it…now I’m a little sad I waited so long. It was an enjoyable story and a great motivator.
FOR RUNNING ![]()
Once a Runner by John L Parker
I can’t think all of you who recommended this enough. I made this my audio book for the last portion of Vegas marathon training and it was perfect. This book follows the amusing antics and thoughts of a college runner…I won’t give away the entire story, but suffice to say that while it’s not all about running it certainly will resonate with those who enjoy the sport and want a little extra umph to inspire their running.
Born to Run: A hidden tribe by Christopher McDougall ![]()
As mentioned in the Vibram v Newtown posts, this book is what really increased my desire to learn more about barefoot running. The basis of the story is a small tribe living in the desert that lives quietly as a community and LOVES to run as a sport/game/fun. As he talks more about these people there are side bars about why barefoot running is better for you and all the scientific evidence behind this theory. If I didn’t know better I would think Vibram paid for this book because it’s a ringing endorsement.
I love that so many of you also find time to read and share with me more great books. It keeps my pile growing and my mind very happy!

I'm grateful for olympic coverage, too, but it's keeping me up way too late every night!
I really like Barbra Kingsolver. I haven't read anything of hers in a while though. When I'm done with my current audiobook. I'll put her on my ipod. Thanks for the reminder.

i am reading once a runner right now, i need to look into getting audio books I don't always have a ton of time to read but during workouts my ears are free to listen. Where do you usually purchase your audiobooks from??
I read The Shack last year. I found it slow to begin with, but I loved the message in the end. Great book reviews :-)
Hurray for book recommendations! I've had Animal, Veg, Miracle on my shelf for a while and haven't started it yet...thanks for the push!
Ohh thanks for sharing the books. I'll have to add a few of them to my list.
So great readers. With a biking sherpa who is a literature teacher, I am working on The Shack so she and I can discuss it during our next long run. I'll have to get her to read some of the others. Maybe I can get her off the bike?!?
I love to get reading recommendations! So thanks! :) i think I want to try an audio book or two to listen to on my commute to work.
