A number of you have become friends with me on GoodReads and I love it because I gotten so many ideas! During October I was committed to reading only business books as part of Birthday Challenge 3. The result was AMAZING in terms of knowledge, but it really made my soul hurt…I know you laugh, but it’s true reading relaxes me, gives me ideas and inspires me to think outside the box.
FOR FUN
Mr and Miss Anonymous by Fern Michaels
Sometimes don’t you just need a mindless read? I do and if it involves a little obvious romance and a fairly obvious happy ending, so what! I enjoy pretty much any book by Michaels and this was no exception. The book follows two people who donated sperm and eggs respectively during college, only to later find out they may not have been going to the deserving people that they had hoped…maybe they were being used for something more devious.
Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella
Again another fun no brainer. I was intrigued by the story and found myself reading later in to the night with this fun loving book. It follows a woman whose life is not exactly going as planned, then gets even stranger when a ghost begins to tag along every where she goes. It’s amusing and uplifting and yup romantic and completely unbelievable. What can I say, I’m a sucker for silly fiction.
FOR SPIRIT
4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris
While this book isn’t directly tied to spirit, I think it’s applicable because it’s all about what you can do to free up time to LIVE life. It’s about being efficient and opening your eyes to new possibilities so that you can fully embrace opportunities. I listened to the audio book while running and then got the hardback to actually read through a few other things and get websites he lists.
Attractor Factory by Joe Vitale
This is another book about the law of attraction. It goes beyond just smiling to feel better and focuses on really feeling what it would be like to have the things you desire. I am enthralled with the idea that everything that happens to me I have attracted in some way. For example, when I thought about my wedding I was focused on three things: Seeing David at the end of the aisle, dancing with my father and having a MEMORABLE wedding. Well HELLO hurricane Anastasia may have made for an awful wedding, but no one has yet forgotten that day.
FOR RUNNING
The Extra Mile by Pam Reed
Wow intensity personified. I enjoyed this book, but didn’t find in it the motivation that I did with something like Dean Karnazes. I think this could be because so much of the book focused on her struggles with food or with her family. It’s not that I couldn’t relate but that I felt weird about her choices…not eating prior to most runs which are well over 20 miles and such. I understand this was her story and not a guide for how to be a better runner, but
Run For Life by Roy Wallack
This is a great book for learning all kinds of things. Here is where I found information about exercises to improve my form, as well as some new stretches and all kinds of other recommendations to keep my body strong for years to come. I also really enjoyed the many, many interviews in the book with athletes. It shows you that no one approach fits everyone and provides some motivation to still be in amazing shape when I’m 40, 50, 60 and heck 90! I think it would be amazing to be the 90 year old woman finishing a marathon…I guess we’ll see in 52 years if I still feel that way!
What great books have you read?? What no time for reading…grab an audio book for that next long run!

29 good vibes:
I read the 20s Girl - good, but some of Kinsella's books are much better! Your other books sound good, I may have to look them up.
I go in and out of reading a ton of books and then not reading for months. I can only chalk it up to being busy with work or marathon training. Right now on I am back on the reading bandwagon and am finally reading The Time Travelers Wife. Soooo good! The book by Michaels sounds good, too! Thanks for the recomendations as always :)
I love your monthly recommendations! I am reading Dan Browns The lost Symbol. I like the thriller type sometimes to mix things up!
I really need to get back into pleasure reading. By the time I am done catching up on blogs and doing paperwork, I don't want to read anymore! LOL. I am currently finishing up The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks and will be reading Dear John before it comes out in theaters... I have read all of his other books. Such easy reading.
I haven't read any of those. Thanks for the ideas/reviews.
I am a sucker for mindless girly books. I've never tried an audio book, but it actually might help me. I think I'm going to look into that. Thanks for the ideas!
Great reviews... I'm putting a couple in my Kindle wish list right now. Do you use an E-reader?? For somebody that reads so much you can get a big savings from using one. I have a kindle and L-O-V-E it!!

Thanks for the book suggestions. I am just easing my way into reading right now and I have been obsessed with Celia Rivenbark. She has a series of essays in several books that are gut splitting funny. I just finished "You Can't Drink All Day if You Don't Start in the Morning."
Hi Amanda, wow, great blog! I've read it before but the setup of it it so cool!! I would love to give you more info on my clean eating transition/guest blog. SO COOL! my email is bbertrand@vzw.blackberry.net. thanks
loved, loved, loved twenties girl- I loved all her books though. Have you read the shopaholic books? so funny! I'll have to try out some of these others. Did you try out the lentil stew? how'd it go?
I felt the same way about Twenties Girl! I'm currently reading "The Starter Marriage" and will be posting about it soon. Just finished "Talk to the Hand" by Lynn Truss (Humorous "rant" about the rise of rudeness in society (from the perspective of a Brit). I'm definitely going to check out the 4-hour Workweek - thanks for the recs!
I am loving your idea of the audio book for long runs and for me, boring elliptical sessions. Per your suggestion i will be reading the Four Hour Work Week and Run for Life. I have been thinking a ton lately about how to run smartly so that I can still be running into my later years. I don't want to burn out this body quite yet.
These days I am reading Olive Kitteridge (not really chick lit, but just a really good read) and The Four Most Important Things (good for the soul).
My boyfriend is reading the 4-Hour Work Week right now and I can't wait until he finishes so I can get my hands on it.
Audiobooks.. I have so much going on inside my head when I run I doubt I would absorb anything.. I just won the Dean K book and I am excited to start reading it.
I felt the same way about The Extra Mile. I was impressed by her but also kept scratching my head a bit. And I didn't love how she almost seemed to belittle her family. But, it was interesting!
I wasn't a fan of Pam Reed's book. I just read a great one, though - Miles from Nowhere, about a couple who takes two years and bikes around the world. Definitely worth checking out!
MAN I don't know where you time for reading!!! I should get some Audio books!!!
i am in the market for a good book for my trip, so thank you thank you!
I have to try an audio book on a long run. maybe that would help me through the runs I need to do on the treadmill. I almost poked my eyes out today.
I always LOVE it when you post book reviews because I add a bunch to my list of must reads. I am on Good Reads too but I can't say I am an active member...I wonder if we are friends on there too ;)
I'm so glad I stopped by today...I love Sophia Kinsella and didn't know she had a new one. I'm listening to The White Queen right now but Philipa Gregory and so far it's awesome. Wish I had more time to read fun stuff!!
Thanks for sharing. I'm always on the lookout for a good book.
amanda! LOVE the new set up!! it is so nice!!! thanks for the reviews! I am reading the Shack its pretty good just started it though
Oooooo thanks for the book ideas! I love a good book.
AND
thanks for the kind words. They meant a lot. :)
I got into the Friday Night Knitting Club last year and really really loved it. Great Great characters, you really get involved in these awesome ladies lives :)
As far as running books, I'm always a big fan of Chi Running and I recently picked up The Non Runners Guide for Women.... HILARIOUS, with basic refresher knowledge :)
My mom read and loved that Fern Michaels book and I'm currently reading the Sophie Kinsella book. Thanks for the other recommendations!
Great book ideas! I will check them out!
I'm reading the Perfect Mile right now, about the first sub 4 minute mile and it's fun. :)
I basically choose all of my books based on what other people tell me to read. I like a little leap of faith. Unfortunately, I cant read a single fun book until I get my stupid dissertation done.
