Winter Rose by Jennifer Donnelly
Let's just start by saying this book is over 700 pages and no that isn't large print...so now that I have scared most of you away, can I just say that I couldn't put the book down! It probably could have been 150 pages shorter, but honestly I loved it! This book is set in the 1800's and follows one of the first women doctors...she's a do gooder ready to save the world, but finds herself in an eye opening situation when she has to face what true poverty looks like.
The Jester by James Patterson

I was really confused when I started reading this book... I thought he only did murder mysteries and here I was reading a book about knights and sword fights! So once I got over that, this has a great story line about a man who goes off to fight in the Crusade and when he comes home, learns that his wife is gone...he then goes on the war path the avenge her. He does this in many strange and intriguing ways, which made the book a joy to read.
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Ok, I felt like I should love this book because so many of you recommended it...and I did enjoy it. BUT I didn't just relish it and I think this was mostly because it felt a little sad to me and my brain is so jam packed right now, there is no space for sad. This book follows an amazing and interesting story of a man who accidentally joins a circus in the 40's as a vet. I loved the variety this book provided and a strange, intriguing in sight to what really happened when men traveled for days on end with animals...and were considered themselves extremely disposable.
FOR RUNNING/HEALTH

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto
Fascinating, seriously that is the best word for this book. It talks a lot about vitamins and nutrients being studied in a vacuum...sometimes a nutrient alone is not the same as if you had enjoyed it as part of a natural whole food, it doesn't work as well! I found so much great information from reading this and was a tad overwhelmed.
I already f knew that organics were my preference, but after understanding more about the quality of nutrients in food I wish I could get everything from a farmer nearby. It would also be ideal if I knew the farmer slaughtering our meat to ensure they are treated well and not being pumped full of antibiotics.
Here is one of my favorite examples...did you know that apples from 1940 had 3x's the iron of today's apples. Yup your food is watered down!! This matters for those on a weight loss journey because your body is seeking nutrients and when it doesn't find them you tend to remain hungry.
Running with the Buffaloes: A Season Inside with Mark Wetmore, Adam Goucher, and the University of Colorado Men's Cross Country Team
by Chris Lear
Who knew a book about running could make you cry...seriously I was on the plane back from Boston nearly in tears...but aside from that tear jerking moment I LOVED THIS BOOK. If you are needing some running motivation read about a group of guys doing a 5:30 mile for their long 20 mile easy run...HAHA. It made me want to do speed work that's for sure! For those who haven't heard about this book it follows a season of the Colorado University cross country team, a year which had some notables like Groucher.
FOR SPIRIT
Well I really just fell completely down on this one. Sorry gang! I do read a daily email called the Morning Coach which includes some awesome quotes and motivational thoughts. My current favorite:
"A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills and uses these skills to accomplish his goals."

I loved Water for Elephants!
Have I recommended Marathon Woman (Kathrine Switzer) to you before? It's a good one!
i havent read any of these books, although i did borrow Water for Elephants once but the little synopsis on the book flap didnt captivate me so i returned it without having read it.
ive been trying to get the In Defense of Food book @ our library.
Have you read The Kite Runner or Thousand Splendid Suns? Both written by Khaled Hosseini.
LOVE LOVe that quote...I have read it many many times and it always feels like it was written for me..
Off to catch up on your BLOGS..
No time to READ...UGH!!
Can't remember if I have ever recommended a book to you...but I enjoyed "History of Love" (random and quirky)...
I have not read any of the books but you made me want to run to the library right now! Thank you for the recommendations :-)
In Defense of Food was just great. Glad you liked it.
I'm going to look for Running w/Buffaloes.
Hello, and thanks for visiting my blog!! Your blog looks like a lot of fun, and I appreciate all of your book recommendations. The last food and nutrition book I read was "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. It has a lot of science in it, but I learned a whole lot form this book and I refer back to it every once in a while.
Water for Elephants = AWESOME.
Really enjoying Loving Frank right now. Historical fiction about Frank Lloyd Wright. Very juicy. ;)
Water for Elephants is on my list.
Right now I'm reading A Disobedient Girl & it's freakin' awesome.
I also got into the Hunger Games & its sequel. Excellent.
This is my favorite time of the month when you post about books! I haven't read any health books lately but if i find any I will let you know.
I have had Water for Elephants on my to read shelf for a while now, but I'm not sure I'm in the mood for sad right now either, so it may just have to wait a few more weeks. I love these reviews!
I have read and loved Brendan Brazier book "Thrive" highly recommend for athletes.
i second marlene's recc of marathon woman!!!!
i NEED to read running with the buffaloes!!!
and boo!!! I WANT MY APPLE IRON BACK!
love the reading list!! nice books.
Thanks for the reviews! I just got done Omnivore's Dilemna so In Defense of Food is next on the list.
did you already read dean karnazes(?) books?
I really want to read In Defense of Food, I've heard it's really interesting. Another good running book/text book would be Lore of Running, it's really interesting, but really big. We didn't even get to it all in my human physiology class
If you are looking for some mindless good reading then check out Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels. It is like vampires mixed with SATC (minus the fancy clothes). Fun stuff.
Duel in the Sun is on my list of running books to read!
I loved Water for Elephants too. It was sad, but I thought it was good!
How do you have time to read all those books?
BTW, I have something for you on my post from today! :)
I loved Water for Elephants ! My kids read it as well and I did think it had it's sad elements but it had such interesting characters.
The Thrive Diet by Brendan Brazier. Run to get it :)
Oh and regarding touching your toes comment on my blog and couldnt do it when you were a kid. Girl, with all your running your hammies are only gonna get shorter. Just try to stretch em out. I worry about all my runner friends getting hammie injuries. And when I was a kid, I was actually less flexible than I am now. STrange but true. I willed and practiced myself flexible. LOL
I want to give Water for Elephants a shot.
I need to read In Defense of Food. I am reading The Omnivore's Dilemna right now and it is definitely interesting.
I'm reading a book by Jillian Michaels right now called Master Your Metabolism that I'd recommend. It discusses ways to naturally balance your hormones and includes foods and chemicals in foods to avoid and those to eat. It's a pretty interesting topic. My problem is that as I'm reading, I hear her voice talking to me. Maybe I'm crazy? :)
