San Diego is beautiful and I met a ton of bloggers, who are all as sweet and fun in person as comes through in their posts... but ok right now you aren't here for that information.
So the long and short is that I finished in 5:36. In bullet points....
Mile 1 kept my pace in check, so I didn't shoot out
Miles 2-8 smiling feeling amazing
Mile 8.5 oh...no my IT band hurts
Mile 10 limping
Mile 12 no long able to run farther than a 1/3 of mile
Mile 14 ran in to Bobbi and Meghan so I ran with them a bit...worst idea ever
Mile 16 borrow a spectators phone to let David know it was going to be awhile
So yes, I was in severe pain but I walked from mile 12-26.2. I started out walking 14 minute miles and by 22 was doing a 20 minute mile... I'm tall so a 14 min walking mile isn't that hard for me and 20 is like crawling. I asked medical for Tylenol and then picked it up slowly to 18,17, 16 min, finishing with another 15 minute mile.
Unfortunately I couldn't even run across the finish...but you know what I am beyond proud of myself for sticking it out. I'm a runner not a marathon walker and that is a whole new long ball game...but I did it. Oddly enough between walking to the starting, walking home, walking to find David food... I did over 32 miles yesterday... of course I anticpated 26 running, but not like 20 walking!!
Definitely frustrated that this pain showed up out of no where, but I'm probably more determined than ever now to keep running and sign up for another race to redeem myself.
Vacation is going to be tough as I am barely able to walk right now, but I'll suck it up again because hub's is amazing and deserves a great break.
Namaste friends

So sorry about your ITB. Like I said in my recent post, we never know what will happen on race day. I give you athlete of the year for walking that far and for having such a great attitude. Namaste.
Congratulations on sticking it out and finishing. That freeway did a number on my IT band too!
Enjoy San Diego. I hope this weather clears for you. The rain is pretty uncommon for this time of year.
Wow, Amanda, you are amazing. Way to gut it out!
Oh I'm so sorry that your ITB hurt you so bad you had to walk but WOW for stilling finishing! That's great!!
Hope that you both have a wonderful time in San Diego!!
Whoa about your IT band, but so awesome that you stuck it out. Good for you and CONGRATS! That is amazing.
I hope you are feeling better today so you can enjoy SD, because it IS an amazing place.
Down with IT bands!
Sounds like you had a tough time, but that mental experience is in the bank for some other challenge now, and that's the sort of thing a person can't fake. This race experience will surely come in handy again soon :)
Get well!
NUTS!!! So sorry about the ITB. YUCK-O!
Good for you for toughing it out, though. Rest up -- I hope you heal well and quickly.
Oh no! So sorry to hear about the pain at your race! That sucks. But hey, you made it to the finish and that is what counts! There's always next time chica :) Enjoy SD!
Way to dig down deep and finish. Rest up and enjoy the rest of vacation.
Great job sticking it out, Congratulations on finishing the whole thing!
comngrats amanda! walking is much more mental than running and the fact you completed 20 miles WALKING is AMAZING! I can't even think of how hard it was! Treat yourself to a wonderful and relaxing week :)

Way to be strong and stick it out and finish! I know it is frustrating when pain comes out of no where like that during a race.
Have a wonderful vacation and take care of that IT band.
your blog has been such an inspiration to me! your like my unofficial running mentor :) I'm so sorry that your San Diego marathon didn't go as hoped or planned, but the most important thing is that you still stuck it out and that teaches/reminds me about an important thing about running. when you're a runner, there's never a difinte finish line or end. if you have a good run or a bad run, there will always be another run right around the corner. Anywhooo- enjoy your vaca!
Hey you still have marathon #2 in the books - and I'm sure you'll have lots and lots to take away from the race. You really fought back against injury during your training, I know you'll be able to keep working and keep accomplishing great things.
Enjoy the rest of vacation, and the beauty of California! Running and your whole RBF will be here for you when you get back. I'm so inspired by you pushing through the whole way to the end!
Yeesh! Pain that early and you finished. I will say congrats, but seriously that's how one injures themselves further. Damn runners don't know when to quit... Congratz anyway. Hope you recover fast.
Uh oh, sorry to hear about the IT band pain!! Way to go on sticking it out though and finishing, that has to be a great feeling. Whoohoo!! Have an awesome rest of the trip, despite the leg. Can't wait to hear more when you get back!

way to push yourself.

so sorry about the ITB! But way to keep going across the finish. I hope you feel better soon.
good for you for sticking with it! :)
I've loved reading everyone's marathon recaps - that is an incredible time considering your injury/walking over half the marathon - you've truly been a model of the power of positive thinking!!
GAH on your ITB! So sorry to hear it intruded on your marathon, but you finished it nonetheless - CONGRATS!
sorry to hear your had a tough marathon experience... it's familiar, trust me, but i'm so happy that you were able to gut it out and finish the race. wishing you a speedy recovery...
Bummer about the ITB. It was so nice meeting you! :) I looked for you on Race morning but couldn't find you :( Great job on finishing though! Seems like it was a rough day for some people, so you weren't alone!
ENJOY YOUR VACA!!!!!!!!!!! vaca is the best sometimes. you rock, seriously, i loved seeing you in everyone's blog pictures all across the blog world!!!!!! i can't imagine having to deal with severe pain MID marathon... like it's not hard enough. way to get it done, and get to the finish line and you know what-- your time is pretty good for power walking half!!!!!!! damn girl!
Seriously, congratulations for gutting it out and finishing strong. I've had some nasty IT band problems, too, and I know how rough it can be just to walk, let alone walk 20 miles.
Enjoy the well-earned break from the real world :)
I feel so bad that things didn't go as planned! You are such a trooper for finishing, even if it meant walking. Hopefully you can get some serious recovery in this week while on vaca!
hey girlie... first it was so awesome to meet you!!! i am so sorry that your ITB decided to be mean yesterday. i am sure the freeway portion didn't help at all, that was hard with the slant. way to go for sticking it out when you were in so much pain, that is NOT an easy thing to do. hang in there and hope you recover quick and can enjoy the rest of your trip. (((hugs)))
way to finish!!!
I'm sorry your ITB acted up but I am SO proud of you and think you are such a rockstar for sticking it out!! Amazing work! :)
I don't know many details about my trip to KC this coming weekend yet, but I'll let you know when I do, hopefully we'll get to meet up again!
You started and finished a marathon! That's an accomplishment for sure. Way to gut it out, adn I hope you enjoy every second of that vacation.
Way to hang in there....hopefully you can enjoy the rest of your vacation time without too much pain!
Amazing job! WTG sticking it out and walking when you couldn't run. Hope you can figure out where the pain came from.
Enjoy the rest of your vacation.
Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about your ITB acting up. :( As someone who has walked the last half of a marathon...it is humbling, and tough and you really get a different perspective on the race. It is really tough, but congratulations on sticking through it to the finish. I hope you are able to enjoy the rest of your vacation!
awww girl SO sorry about your IT band but YOURE AMAZING FOR FINISHING!!!
Great job on such a tough finish. Very proud of you!
Aw I'm so sorry about your IT band. That's incredible that you still finished. You're tough! Great job sticking it out.
Wow. Way to finish! I saw your pick on Aron's blog and recognized you!
It was only last week that I realized you were going to SD!
You did a great job!
I'm sorry about your injury but I am incredibly proud of you for finishing. Hopefully you'll recover soon and will be back at it! You always pick yourself, dust yourself off and keep going. You are an inspiration, Amanda!
Try to enjoy the rest of your vacation. Lots of laying around and resting can't be too bad either ;)
sorry about the injury, but congrats on finishing the race...i know the feeling of not being able to run across the finish line, that's how i was in okc...it sucks, but you should be proud of yourself for finishing...heal up quick!
Pain's no fun but way to work through it! Great job!
Sorry to hear about your injury - but how amazing are you to have finished when you started having trouble half way through?! That's incredible. Well done.
Congratulations on marathon #2!! That must have taken alot of gut and determination to stick it out despite the pain, so you should be very proud, and you did great!
No matter how you get to the end, 26.2 miles is a loooong way to go. Well done!
Congrats on finishing no matter what! Hope you enjoy the signts in San Diego. I have found memories of a couple trips to Sea World.
I'm sticking with half marathons until I can figure how to keep my legs happier. My problem is with my adductors/groin mostly. So a full marathon may never be on my schedule, but that's OK.
Congrats on finishing and not quitting.
Hope you enjoy your vacation.
I've been looking for your race report! I'm glad you posted, in spite of the high rates. :[
It sounds like you started out GREAT! I'm sorry your IT band decided to flare up. I'm impressed that you finished in the amount of time you did, considering you had to walk much of it.
I was looking for you... but you must have been ahead of me the whole time. :)
Enjoy the rest of your time in San Diego... it looks like the sun is coming out today.
So sorry about your IT Band but so happy that you were able to finish the race! You did a great job pushing through and I can only imagine it was frustrating! So major props to you!
Oh man, that's awesome you worked through the ITB. I hope it is feeling better soon. You're definitely right to be proud of yourself - enjoy the rest of your time there!
I'm so sorry the pain tried to push you down- but I'm so proud of you for pushing back!! Good job!
Hey, congrats on gutting it out and finishing. Now get healed and get that BQ!
