Marathon Quick and Dirty

Well Internet is an amazing $6 for 15 minutes so this will be my one update via San Diego... I'll post pics and all the details Thursday.

San Diego is beautiful and I met a ton of bloggers, who are all as sweet and fun in person as comes through in their posts... but ok right now you aren't here for that information.

So the long and short is that I finished in 5:36. In bullet points....
Mile 1 kept my pace in check, so I didn't shoot out
Miles 2-8 smiling feeling amazing
Mile 8.5 oh...no my IT band hurts
Mile 10 limping
Mile 12 no long able to run farther than a 1/3 of mile
Mile 14 ran in to Bobbi and Meghan so I ran with them a bit...worst idea ever
Mile 16 borrow a spectators phone to let David know it was going to be awhile

So yes, I was in severe pain but I walked from mile 12-26.2. I started out walking 14 minute miles and by 22 was doing a 20 minute mile... I'm tall so a 14 min walking mile isn't that hard for me and 20 is like crawling. I asked medical for Tylenol and then picked it up slowly to 18,17, 16 min, finishing with another 15 minute mile.

Unfortunately I couldn't even run across the finish...but you know what I am beyond proud of myself for sticking it out. I'm a runner not a marathon walker and that is a whole new long ball game...but I did it. Oddly enough between walking to the starting, walking home, walking to find David food... I did over 32 miles yesterday... of course I anticpated 26 running, but not like 20 walking!!

Definitely frustrated that this pain showed up out of no where, but I'm probably more determined than ever now to keep running and sign up for another race to redeem myself.

Vacation is going to be tough as I am barely able to walk right now, but I'll suck it up again because hub's is amazing and deserves a great break.

Namaste friends

So sorry about your ITB. Like I said in my recent post, we never know what will happen on race day. I give you athlete of the year for walking that far and for having such a great attitude. Namaste.

Congratulations on sticking it out and finishing. That freeway did a number on my IT band too!

Enjoy San Diego. I hope this weather clears for you. The rain is pretty uncommon for this time of year.

Down with IT bands!

Sounds like you had a tough time, but that mental experience is in the bank for some other challenge now, and that's the sort of thing a person can't fake. This race experience will surely come in handy again soon :)

Get well!

Way to be strong and stick it out and finish! I know it is frustrating when pain comes out of no where like that during a race.

Have a wonderful vacation and take care of that IT band.

your blog has been such an inspiration to me! your like my unofficial running mentor :) I'm so sorry that your San Diego marathon didn't go as hoped or planned, but the most important thing is that you still stuck it out and that teaches/reminds me about an important thing about running. when you're a runner, there's never a difinte finish line or end. if you have a good run or a bad run, there will always be another run right around the corner. Anywhooo- enjoy your vaca!

Hey you still have marathon #2 in the books - and I'm sure you'll have lots and lots to take away from the race. You really fought back against injury during your training, I know you'll be able to keep working and keep accomplishing great things.

Enjoy the rest of vacation, and the beauty of California! Running and your whole RBF will be here for you when you get back. I'm so inspired by you pushing through the whole way to the end!

Yeesh! Pain that early and you finished. I will say congrats, but seriously that's how one injures themselves further. Damn runners don't know when to quit... Congratz anyway. Hope you recover fast.

Seriously, congratulations for gutting it out and finishing strong. I've had some nasty IT band problems, too, and I know how rough it can be just to walk, let alone walk 20 miles.

Enjoy the well-earned break from the real world :)

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about your ITB acting up. :( As someone who has walked the last half of a marathon...it is humbling, and tough and you really get a different perspective on the race. It is really tough, but congratulations on sticking through it to the finish. I hope you are able to enjoy the rest of your vacation!

Sorry to hear about your injury - but how amazing are you to have finished when you started having trouble half way through?! That's incredible. Well done.

Marci said...

Congratulations on marathon #2!! That must have taken alot of gut and determination to stick it out despite the pain, so you should be very proud, and you did great!

Lisa Slow-n-Steady said...

No matter how you get to the end, 26.2 miles is a loooong way to go. Well done!

Shirley said...

Congrats on finishing no matter what! Hope you enjoy the signts in San Diego. I have found memories of a couple trips to Sea World.

I'm sticking with half marathons until I can figure how to keep my legs happier. My problem is with my adductors/groin mostly. So a full marathon may never be on my schedule, but that's OK.

Toni said...

Congrats on finishing and not quitting.
Hope you enjoy your vacation.

I've been looking for your race report! I'm glad you posted, in spite of the high rates. :[

It sounds like you started out GREAT! I'm sorry your IT band decided to flare up. I'm impressed that you finished in the amount of time you did, considering you had to walk much of it.

I was looking for you... but you must have been ahead of me the whole time. :)

Enjoy the rest of your time in San Diego... it looks like the sun is coming out today.
