OPINIONS WANTED FRIDAY
1. What is your all time favorite sandwich? What's the healthiest sandwich you enjoy? Do you make it at home..buy it?

2. Bulk food bags? I've been buying more oats, ground flax, etc out of the bulk bins and it annoys me to keep putting it all in plastic bags...since I'm bringing a canvas bag for my groceries to cut down on bags. Any ideas?

-----------------------------
DOCTOR
I have not 1 but 2 inflamed IT Bands and bursitis in both knees and SCIATICA PAIN...one is pretty out of this world since I can barely walk....so gentle stretching and gentle walking are the most I am recommended to do for awhile. HOLY SH**. no biking, no long walks, no elipitical, no serious yoga...I am ok with this right now because I'm on pain meds and ready to get better...we'll see how long that lasts.

Cannot get a PT appointment for evaluation until the 25th..WTF. I talked to my sister-in-law who is a PT and she said stop using that damn stick if you are so inflammed..oye I can't win.

As I told Aron, I'm ready to heal up for years of running, rather than months of running...so even if I can't run SD as planned this is part of my running journey and I'll learn...heal and be better for it I hope.

I know you keep saying enjoy the time off...I don't want time off running, walking, hiking, etc that is my relief from life. Anyhow my plan is to begin using my mornings to meditate and catch up on blogs, then to start keeping my evenings busy with other things that I may have wanted to do...so that I can stay busy and hopefully not miss the activity and not eat too much!

Look out world, I'll be finding all kinds of weird ways to work my arms this week...muscle woman!

Two IT band flare ups! Wow, I'm sorry. Rest and stretching is the only thing that works for me. Upper body strength training is the way to go. Have a great weekend!

Yuck. ITB issues are no fun. That stinks that you you can't get an appt. for a while. Sounds like you are being smart though, keep it up !

Lisa Slow-n-Steady said...

I'm really sorry about your injuries, but you have the right attitude - heal up for YEARS of running (long haul) not for MONTHS (short term).

I understand that taking a break from running, etc isn't fun. But you WILL find a silver lining once you open your mind up to it.

Hang in there!

lindsay said...

yikes! i hope your it bands take to the pt well and start feeling better! being sidelined is no fun, especially when running/working out is an important piece of your day. :( hang in there, hope you get well soon!

Danielle said...

Oh that sucks about your IT Bands...stretch good. Actually they'd say stay away from the foam roller (at least some would) since it's really agressive too. Stretch, stretch, stretch!

Not sure what to suggest about bulk bins but you could ask at the stores if you brough in glad ware or something like that if you could use that instead...I'm surprised they don't have options like that already on the bins with people wanting to reduce plastic.

i love sandwiches, but rarely make them at home...probably should but usually i'm too busy or lazy...subway and mr goodcents are my favs with planet sub close third...i'm simple i go with turkey on wheat and lots of veggies....

I'm sorry to hear about your injuries. It would be hard to not be able to exercise at all, but it sounds like you have a good plan.

Abby said...

Holy cow!

I'm so sorry to hear that the IT band issues have spread (maybe it's contagious). Sounds like you have a good plan now with the serious rest and light stretching. Just think - more time to catch up on running books and play around in the kitchen!

Melanie said...

So sorry about the IT/knee injuries. wow. you have a very good attitude about the healing, hang in there, and keep being smart.

Mica said...

Wow, sorry about your IT band and bursa sacks. I hope you are able to enjoy your time off at least a little bit and get better ASAP! I'll be thinking of you. Rest up, and feel better, lady!

bill carter said...

Both IT Bands?? That is not even fair. But you are right in that you have to look at things in terms of the long term and not the short.

Best of luck!

Jess said...

Wow both IT bands causing you problems. That stinks! I really hope with some rest and stretching you'll be back to some running or walking soon!

CPB said...

Ek! Rest and heal quickly. It is difficult to have to abstain from working out, I've been there. But listen to your body and let it heal; you'll be back to running in no time.

When I buy in bulk I typically bring tupperwear containers or a reusable bag that has been made out of oil cloth (it doubles as a lunch bag. Take a piece of oil cloth and sew it onto a square of cloth. Sew in half so the oil cloth is facing in and sew up 2 sides leaving the top open. You can use velcro to close, buttons, zipper or just a piece of string. I hate sewing so I opt for the glue on velcro), or my own zip lock bags which I wash between uses.

Thanks for the compliment on my blog. I’ve been reading your blog for a couple weeks and following your knee problems. I will definitely check out the give away.

RE: bulk bins... I have actually found that sometimes the packaged foods are cheaper which ticks me off. For oats I recommend Costco (or similar) I get something like 5 lbs for under $10. Don't know what to say about the plastic bags it irritates me too.

So sorry about your IT bands - I TOTALLY know how you feel. Mine started acting up about 1 month before my half-marathon and I was able to run it, but it screwed me for about 2 months afterward.

Can you try some gentle yoga and pilates?

Mom on the Run said...

Wow! I hope you rest and just heal!

In good news...You won the blog fairy contest at my blog. Check it out!

N.D. said...

It sounds like you have a good plan to get through this time of recovery and rest. It will be better in the end and make you come back quicker and stronger!

I'm bad with sandwiches. I don't eat them much.

Can you store the stuff in tupperware or is that even worse?

The Happy Runner said...

Good luck with the ITBs! Ick. That's tough.

Bulk foods...I'm a believer. I go to a co-op by me that is GREAT! I load up on oats, flax, nuts, etc. I bring my own containers that I fill up. They weigh them at the front of the co-op and then deduct the weight when I check out.

Lacey Nicole said...

i loooooooove hummus-avocado sandwiches with veggies. i also like veggie burger-hummus sandwiches or egg and morningstar sausage patty sandwiches. !!! they are all so freaking good. if you haven't tried morningstar veggie sausage patties,... try them! elliot loves them!

RunWithMe said...

Wow that's tough not being able to do so many things that you love. I think you have the right attitude -take time to slow down, go inside and feel the challenge of not being able to move the way that you'd like.

tfh said...

That's a painful diagnosis. Meditation definitely sounds better than becoming addicted to pain meds. It's is hard to consider it "time off" when it's from something you enjoy indeed.

Anyway. Healthy sandwiches-- so "anything with cheese" doesn't count? In that case, baked falafel and hummus with pickled veggies.

As for bulk foods, I reuse the containers my non-bulk foods came in-- oat canisters, for instance, and old rice bags and the plastic containers my baby spinach comes in and the big Dominos sugar canister. Just be sure to note the tare weight before filling up the container!

raulgonemobile said...

Wow.. that really stinks. Hang in there..

BOTH IT bands? That sucks! Get well soon.

If I were you, I'd just turn into a crazy crunching lady. I'd have the buffest upper body ever. =) Just stick with what the doc tells you. Hopefully the PT will have a cancellation and fit you in sooner??

jessica said...

Oh, holy abs -- you're going to have plenty of energy for crunches!

Just as I was commenting something like "blah, blah, yoga helped me, yammer, yammer," my left ITB flared up with a vengeance last night. Came home about to cry from the frustration. Fun for all.

When I used to travel, I'd make a huge roasted veggie sandwich on a whole loaf of ciabatta with either olive tapenade or cheeseless pesto, then wrap the whole thing up tight and eat instead of fast food. But... Panera's greasefest tomato basil mozzarella panini is calling my name right now.

www.reusablebags.com has the cutest little muslin produce/bulk baggies that I've been wanting to try -- I hate the plastic too. Once home I store stuff in old glass jars, but not so much because I'm thrifty, as I think it looks all orderly and crap.

Alisa said...

Yikes! I completely understand how frustrating it is to WANT to get out there and physically not be able to. Meditation, arm and ab work should help keep your mind off things a little bit.

Jamie said...

I'm really sorry to hear that! Keep up a positive attitude. This too will pass and if you follow drs orders you'll be back in no time!

Janice {Run Far} said...

and I thought it sucked to have one inflamed IT band. I went through weeks of PT. It really helped me. It's been since 2002 and I havent had to much trouble since.

polly said...

hi there! I just ran across your blog, love it!! I am sorry about yoru IT bands. I hope you heal totally and can run strong again for life! :) I have a couple questions for you... usually I'm an emailer but didn't see yours on your blog. Could you email me? My email is on my blog. XOXO

My question is about your awesome yoga challenge and about what BBC means? I assume something about daily fruit and veggies eaten? LOVE THAT!!! XOXO

Katerina said...

Very sorry to hear that my dear. IT will be a growing experience for you I am sure!

Meg said...

I'm so sorry about your IT bands! How frustrating!
My favorite sandwich (vegetarian): slices of sweet potato (boiled), avacado, slice of favorite cheese, tomato, and a little bit of red onion, all in a wrap (usually spinach). The sweet potato makes it more filling as a veggie sandwich.

aron said...

your poor lower half :( that sounds painful!!! keep up that great positive attitude of yours girl!

sandos - my FAVVVV :)

I have 2 favs that I buy from delis... both are veg that have cheese, avo, sprouts, cucumber, onion, tomoato, lettuce, red pepper. YUMMMM I am getting hungry now.

Every Gym's Nightmare said...

I just posted about legless cardio- imagine that ;)

My fave sandwhich, hmm. Id have to say a grilled portabella sandwhich- never make them at home buit if they are on the menu i always order them out

Ali said...

Sandwich .. my favourite would be a hot grilled panini of turkey, cheese, not peppers, pesto, basically the works ... yum

For healthy ... a whole wheat wrap with hummus, tonnes of veggies, peppers, avocado and olives, oh and a little hot sauce. I can make it, but it tastes so much better when someone else does!

What a bummer about your injuries, I totally feel the ITB pain. Big hugs coming at you!

Abby said...

Oh, and I just made a great sandwich the other day. Usually I stick to easy stuff like hummus with lots of veggies, but I was feeling adventurous. First, I melted a little bit of light mozzarella on one of those flatout wraps. While that was toasting, I cooked up a diced veggie burger and some mushrooms on the stovetop, and through in some pepper and garlic salt. When it was finished, I put the burger and mushrooms in the wrap, rolled it up and added a little bit of ketchup, and I had a healthy vegetarian philly cheesesteak!

Abby said...

'Threw,' rather. Not 'through.'

ttfn300 said...

oh no, sorry to hear about your knees :/

i know someone cells reusable bags for such things as bulk bins. i never thought of all those plastic bags! but oh how i am conscious of that weight :)

Runner Leana said...

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about the bursitis and the ITB stuff. I hate to say it, but once this isn't causing you as much pain, it may be time for that foam roller... Get better soon, I know you are keen to get back to running!!

skinnyrunner.com said...

wow that sounds serious and painful! hope you start to feel better... or at least get a lot of funny meds.
turkey on wheat. best sandwich.

sarah said...

oh no!! it's amazing how injuries can build gradually and then all of the sudden -- EMERGENCY! i like your perspective though -- you're in it for the long haul, not just one race. i hope that you start feeling better soon!

Alexandra said...

Oh man, that's the pitts! I feel for you, cause I know what it's like when you can't do what you love to do! Hang in there!

aNd! said...

I'm on running hiatus right now for IT band problems....although I am having a really hard time not hiking, biking, lifting. If you find the magic fix let me know!

Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) said...

Hope your injuries get better!! No fun at all!

Let's see, favorite sandwich...I love wraps actually. You can put all sorts of veggies in there. I made one the other day with turkey, spinach and apple slices. YUM!

Sarah said...

So sorry about your legs, girls! That is rough. Hang in there and rest up! I like your attitude. . . rest for now, run for years later!

ShirleyPerly said...

So sorry to hear about the injuries! Maybe swimming is an option too as well as upper body work in the gym? I hope you are better soon.

Denise said...

Wow, you really did a number on yourself!! I hear you, though. I'm sure there's nothing enjoyable about this "time off." But you're right...you need to heal up for YEARS of running that's ahead of you.

the gazelle said...

I try to take the bulk plastic bags back every time, but I would like to find something reusable AND durable (I use envirosax for my grocery bags: http://www.envirosax.com/)

Rachel said...

Feeling for you on the injuries.

Fav. sandwhich is 1/2 avocado filled with a chicken salad mixture.

Run For Life said...

Well that sucks. :( I hope it heals quickly and that you're not in too much pain. When you talk to your doctor again maybe you can ask if swimming is ok?

sRod said...

Favorite sandwich: turkey, brie, and raspberry mustard (so freaking good!)

Absolutely sucks about your legs, but you have a great mentality about it. You need to take care of them because you only get one pair.
