Learning, Learning, Learning

Life it's about learning... some days the lessons are easy and some days they are hard. So here are the interesting, strange and fun things I have been learning.

Asking about Gels I learned: Most of you can't chew and run...that's pretty dang funny.

Talking about pacing I learned: Most of us don't know how!

Reviewing Garmin Connect I learned: I am so glad I didn't know what kind of hills I was headed for on Saturday.
Talking to the guy at the running store I learned: I have a stiff arch. I also learned a new way to tie my laces for loose fit because my foot takes up so much room and yet keep the looping at the top because my heel slides. On the right you can see there are 2 loops very close together through the tongue of the shoe..that was my issue and guess what I found that both new pairs of shoes had that, while my old one's didn't! So the left shoe is the new looser tie.Checking out Gels I learned: They are full of sugar and calories, I'm going to have to account for this in my eating if I start using them...cause I will not be the gal who gains weight during marathon training.

Picking up my cat's medicine I learned: He may always lick his fur off because he's just a little... special.

Talking about gratitude I learned: You guys have no idea what a whiner I used to be when I was younger...hence the desire now to really love life...it's so much more fun.

At work I am learning: Not everyone is as organized and efficient as I am, that doesn't make them bad people...just slow.

Gratitude Journal
Feb 3:
I am grateful that the words never seem to stop coming.
I am grateful I can pick up the phone and still talk to my parents any time.
I am grateful for things that divert my attention from sugar.
I am grateful for inspiring books and quotes.

Uh, I really don't think the gels could put any weight on us. The post-run bingeing? Well - that's a different story :)

I've learned that I'm not the only one that does these things, like not being able to chew. I've tied my shoes similarly in the past and it worked really well, so hopefully it brings you the same success.
And I woulnt worry about the gel calories - the pasta befor and beer after are the ones to look out for. I pretend that the gels are pretty much burned as soon a I eat them :)

great post :) i tie my shoes like that and its the best!!

i wouldnt worry about the calories in those gels... you dont eat enough of them to offset all that calorie burn during a run anyways :)

I'm going to have to try that shoe-tying technique. I'm intrigued!

Actually, I can chew and run, just don't ask me to chew, run and breathe at the same time!

i didn't really think it was that was to gain weight during marathon training! anyhow, thats such an interesting way to tie your sneakers - mine always feel kinda snug so maybe i'll try to copy it =)

Love your "I'm grateful" statements. I've just gotten into running and finished my first marathon in January. Hope you don't mind if I visit your blog often to get tips and motivation...

I did get new shoes, from the OnlineShoes giveaway, about a month ago, maybe I will try lacing them differently to see if that helps, once I'm running again...

You've such great gratitudnal thoughts -it makes me think and want to be a better person. I need to keep that up. Yes - gels add on the sugars/cals so run it off! did you find any good ones? Great hill workout!!!

Great post. I definitely can't chew while running or pace properly, and I have gained weight during marathon training almost every time.

Fun post! I totally gained weight while training for Disney. I joke that I had to finish the marathon so I could go on a diet. :)

I think I'm one of the weird ones - I actually like the chewy stuff on long runs... It makes for a fun distraction, especially when it's really cold out and you have to work had to warm it up!

Question on the 7 miler - we can do that any day this week, right?

Alright email me at jsejt@yahoo.com and I'll pop you those questions.

Fun post! It's interesting tying your shoes a little differently can have a big effect on shoe fit.

Hey Sweetie - Thanks so much for your kind comments. I think I am still mourning a little bit. Gonna take time. But I can't wait to not have pain. That will be a good thing.

Good luck taking the reins for 7 on the 7th. Looks like you are doing a smashing job.

XOXO

Aw, poor kitty. Newman does that when he gets stressed out about stuff.

Just an FYI I never use gels and such on runs till I hit at least 15miles, OK, so I haven't used any yet this year and I've done 15 and should use it, but just saying you definitely won't gain using them. As for the sugars, Carbboom are more natural ones, use real fruit. I like the strawberry kiwi. And for marathon training, you can't help but possibly gain a little, or if you're lucky, stay the same. Almost impossible to lose cause you have to eat for the training you are doing.

Yeah, you start to learn a whole bunch when you start marathon training. You don't realize how much shakes out of the wood work (like the high arch).
